Working in NZ

Hey,
I've lived in NZ most of my life and grew up in Wanaka.

Basically, you really want to be in either Wanaka or Queenstown, preferably Wanaka IMO. Queenstown is a bit bigger and more 'touristy" Wanaka is more of a skier town and has better skiing. In Wanaka there are 3 resorts (Treble Cone, Cardrona, Snow Park). Queenstown has two (coronet peak, and remarkables but Cardrona is not that far either). In terms of good skiing, Treble Cone is the best by a long way, but not really any park to speak of (but a lot of natural features). Cardrona and Snow Park have the best parks but Remarks is also ok.

What do you plan on doing in terms of work? Instructing/ resort work? Or are you just looking for something like at bar ect which will pay the bills?

Neither are exceptionally cheap, in terms of living costs, but you can get a house and put a few more people in it and it can be affordable for sure.

In order to work outside the US you will need either a work permit or working holiday visa.

From what i've read, a work permit is the more official route for people that may be working for a year or two or for a professional job. It requires lots of paperwork and time to complete. Most countries will not grant you it unless a company has already hired you and agreed to be your "sponsor" to help the application through its approval. At the same time, most companies are hesitant to hire a person that doesn't already have a work permit. So its kinda a lose-lose situation. This mainly applies to corporate transfers and such.


A passport obviously allows you to leave the US and enter a foreign country.
A visa allows you to stay in that foreign country for up to six months or so without having to return home.
A working holiday visa allows you to work in a foreign country for a set amount of time.

So a working holiday visa is what you should look into getting. Luckily NZ offers them to Americans. Canada, Australia, NZ and I believe the UK have an agreement with the US to offer them. Most other countries, IE all the rest of Europe, do not offer them to Americans because it is a two way policy and the US is not willing to let citizens from their countries work in the US so they wont let us work there. If that makes sense.

I assume you are looking at working at a ski resort. If so, I would contact a couple of the ones that have been mentioned and ask what all you would need in order to be employed and all that jazz. Such as on site housing, etc.
