Skiing: Lifestyle or Hobby?

What is it for you?

Ive been discussing this alot with my friends and family lately. I plan on ski bumming for a while, and they keep telling me that its just a hobby. I dont know how to explain to them that its more than that to me.
Thoughts?

i would say skiing is definitely addicting. its probably comparable to crack.

Lifestyle for sure, Going to college has made me realize this more then ever before.  I know that after working hard in school all i wanna do is ski, and honestly making bank and only being able to ski 25 days a season isnt worth it.  Id much rather get 100 days and make mid to low 5 figures for my whole life then make what i possibly could (probably round 100,000) and ski on the weekends.  If your family doesnt ski, then like mine they wont really understand but what ever.

i think it really depends on how much you go, and where you live. cause i live in indiana and people that ski call it their hobby, but people from summit county refer to skiing as more of a lifestyle. i like to think of it as a lifestyle, but then so does everyone else that has an account on ns.

lifestyle, just thinking about how much time i spend on ski related stuff whether that is skiing itself as much as possible, gettin on ns, or whatever it is makes my mind boggle. But this is what i love to do and wouldnt do anything else so its definitely a lifestyle

I make it a lifestyle.
Working involves skiing, days off skiing, off season, building features for skiing. :)

Hobby. I could have made it into a career, working in the industry, I could've made it into a lifestyle living and working in a ski town. But honestly, I think if I ever took it more seriously than a hobby I wouldn't be able to just enjoy it and not care about anything while on the hill.

Exactly. I'm not setting my educational standards low so I can ski every day and have a low income, but I am setting my standards high, hoping to make good money, support a family, be able to afford to take ski trips around the world, get my kids gear, buy myself nice gear, have a nice house in a nice area, and in general live a good life. I won't call it a successful life, because everyone has their own opinion of success, but what the common man would call a better life.

Some may call it a hobby or a lifestyle, but I will definitely be skiing whenever I can, I would consider that a lifestyle, when you try to ski as much as you can and it makes up most of your life/is important in your life.

its a lifestyle you go on newschoolers every night you listen to cali p and hathbanger or watever hes called you like saga you wear coloured hats thats not everbody but u can see a skier by the way hes dressed cuz his life style revolves around skiing

and racing is a sport

Honestly, id say its a lifestyle.

Its how we dress, talk and everything. Like right now skiing and my girlfriend is about everything i look forward to in my life. Those to things consume my thoughts, day in and day out.

Skiing is a lifestyle for those who live it, and a hobby for those who dont.

depends on how you see it. to me its a lifestyle because its all i do. And now that people make more than a living off becoming a pro i think it definately deserves the title of Lifestyle.

Hobby, just one that consumes much of my time and efforts. It doesn't however have any impact on any major decisions that I make in my life and so in that sense I don't see it as a lifestyle.

It depends, how much do you ski/ think about skiing.
And mostly, how much does skiing translate over into your everyday life.
If you go a few times a yea, enjoy it, wear ski clothes on the mountain, and "normal" clothes everywhere else, then it's probably a hobby.
If you ski all the time, think about skiing when you're not skiing. Concern a better part of your time with thinking about gear passes etc., and spend your money accordingly. And especially if your personal style translates directly into skiing, and vice versa. And, Especially if you've ever made a major life decision based almost entirely on how the skiing is, then it's a way of life.
Chances are, that if you're seriously considering being a ski bum for a while, then it's probably more than a hobby. And in all honesty, if that's what you want, figure out how to make it work, and do it. You only live once, and you might as well enjoy it. I think that's the most important thing to remember.
