Bush just loves a good dictatorship!

Bush said they went into Iraq in order to destroy the Weapons of Mass Destruction that Saddam had stockpiled in huge amounts. However, since this hasd been proved as lucdicrous, he has insisted that they invaded in order to overthrow a dictator and to install democracy. Such a proclomation, though noble, is false and hypocritical.

Washington has in fact been resisting the demands of Iraqi citizens to hold elections. Instead, Bush will appoint a government that is loyal to the U.S. In other words, they are appointing another dictatorship, albiet loyal to U.S. interests.

If Bush was truly sincere about liberating countries with dictatorships and installing democracy like he says, why has he not liberated Azerbaijan? This small, oil-rich country just held elections where more than 1,000 people were arrested and tortured for casting the 'wrong' vote. Aliyev, the new president of Azerbaijan is the son of a dictator that ruled this country since the Soviets made it a satalite state. Bush recently visited Azerbaijan and was quoted as saying 'The United States has a relationship with this country. We value it.' Of course Bush would say this as Azerbaijan's dictatorship has granted billions of dollars in contracts to Exxonmobile, Chevrontexaco and BPAmoco; American oil companies.

Meanwhile, in Haiti, a country is being ravaged by armed gangs of thugs. The citizens and elected goverment have been calling for aid for weeks, but Bush has ignored them... Or has he? in truth, the U.S. has been secretely backing the rebels (many of which are former members of the brutal Duvalier dictatorship that lasted 50 years).
Bush destabilized the democratically elected Aristide government by blocking foriegn loans and encouraging the rich elite and gangs of thugs to fight the current government. Former death squad leaders from the Duvalier dictatorship are the leaders of the gangs that have stormed the Haitian capital. Bush was quoted as saying 'I have made it abundantly clear to the coast guard that we will turn back any refugee that attempts to reach our shore.' How compassionate of him.

The reasons for not having democracy established currently in Iraq is a little more involved than 'Bush just doesn't want to.' Sunni Muslims (which was what Saddam was) make up no more than 16 percent of the Iraqi population. Kurds in the northern region make up for approximately 20% of the Iraqi population. So that leaves approximately 2/3 of the population as Shiite Muslims. This was the one of the more persecuted groups within Iraq. One of the strong fears is that in the likely event of the raising of a Shiite leader, that leader would not protect minority rights; and even possibly, take action against the Sunnis.

From here it becomes even more convoluted. The fundamentalism of Shiite Muslims is something America obviously fears. One of the main fears is close ties with Iran. However, Iraqis are Arab, whereas Iranians are Persian for the most part (probably a distinction that many people aren't aware of). This distinction also provides that the two follow different disciplines of Shiism: Akhbari in Iraq, Usuli in Iran. These disciplines have been classified as being somewhat hostile. However, Akhbari Shiism has never promoted political rule, but the Usuli discipline has produced politically active groups of priests. To show further distinction, during the Iraq Iran war, the Iraq Shiites publicly remained loyal to Iraq.

However (again), there exists a Shiite group in Iraq known as the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq. SCIRI has about 4,000-8,000 fighters, composed of Iraqi Shiite exiles and prisoners of war, operating against the Iraqi military in southern Iraq. Although SCIRI has distanced itself from Iran to some extent, Iran's Revolutionary Guard reportedly continues to provide it with weapons and training.

The U.S. just recently met with the brother of the leader of the SCIRI, but they do continue to have more contact with Sunni support groups.

So there are a lot of the facts. I see the line as very gray for reasons that Democratic elections haven't been held yet.

yeah but i don't think i can stand bush for another term. The way i look at it nader takes away democratic votes, and i don't have enough foresight to care about the whole green party 5% deal.

I find it hard to believe that even if this war would have been originally based on the premise of liberation that those who criticize it because of the original premises would have been opposed to it as well. To make the point that 'since we are invading one in the liberation, why don't we invade the rest for the sake of liberation,' is a stretch in my mind. I can't believe for a minute that those saying that would support such a drastic use of force internationally and in so many different regions. These critics would likely be screaming imperialism. Don't kid yourself that the Democrats won't overlook injustices in oil rich countries. The truth is that the next 40-60 years is crunch time for oil. America will have oil as a top priority until alternative sources of fuel are econimical.

Anyway... I'm simply playing Devil's Advocate. I won't be voting for Bush next election. For those of you who are into conspiracy theories, I would actually believe it a smart move of Bush to use those millions in campaign money to pay Nader to run.

Ralph nader is an extremely smart man. Ralph nader says things that no one else, especially any other politician would say. I respect Nader and the greens more then anyone else running (except maybe kusinich) but Ralph Nader is a bit of an idiot right now.

As running for an independant, he wants to bring votes away from the republicans, because other then this being a publicity stunt, (which is uncharacterisically nader) he has no chance in being any sort of competition with bush or kerry. So basically he wants to turn votes away from the republicans so no more bush..... but who do you think is more likely to drop there political affiliation and vote for nader? a democrat or a republican? OF COURSE A DEMOCRAT!!! so he's just taking votes from kerry...... nader needs to think some shit through, the last thing we need is another 4 years of bush

It would be much better if he would just stay strong wiht the Green Party, that way if he gets that 6% vote thing the green party will get national funding or whatever, but even then, he is still taking votes away from the democrats and at this point anyone but Bush would be a great achivement so.......

Black and White is a racial thing, I think most of us can agree that religious differences (especially fundamental ones) are a bit more radical than racial differences. The type of 'oppression' that you feel minorities suffer from in the United States is based a lot on the economical shift of this country coming out of the 50's. There is a lot of sociology involved, but to say it is the White Man oppressing the minorities is a far cry from reality.

We're talking about the Middle East, where people kill each other for their beliefs, and persecute people for their religious beliefs. The degree of tolerance is far less in this religious dichotomy than a racial one in the United States.

I mean if having a nominal Democracy in Iraq controlled by Shiites with oppressed minority groups is your sense of Democratic justice, then I guess we should go on ahead, but I think people would prioritize some degree of stability first.

I thought we were talking about modern Democracy. By using that example of 'Democracy' coupled with your advocation of Democratic elections in Iraq with the acceptable subsequent oppresion, one can infer that you are saying that America's Democracy with slavery is acceptable. I'm pretty sure that's not what you think. If this administration dropped the ball tomorrow and got out of Iraq leaving them to their own Democratic devices, and the outcome resulted in an oppresion comparable to the that occuring in early America, people would be LIVID. For God's sake, even if you don't advocate what happened with our war in Iraq, the formation of Iraq's government is crucial to the success of its people. If the new government is a disaster (a Shiite controlled government with subsequent oppresion WOULD be a disaster), injustice wouldn't even begin to describe that disaster. So things need to be done correctly, not just left to the whim of 'Democracy.'

The film A Revolution Not Televised is the best documentry i have ever seen. it is about a military coup in venesuala in 2001. the elected presedent chaves was temporarily taken out of power by military force. it demostrates the propaganda of the media and our government. Venesuala is a major supplier of oil. the conspiracy is that bush supported this coup that implemented a US freindly govenrment not supported by the people of venesuala. this film was gripping. i highly reccomend everyone see it.

This has to be one of the stupidest comments I've heard in long time...based on your statement I can conclude that you think ANYone that has a brain DIDNT vote for Bush. SOO, since more than half of the population (or half), voted for Bush, then 50% of US citizens do not contain any brain cells whatsoever....EXTREMELY intelligent idea...

And By the way, what a wookie, I haven't had anything to read with an open mind thus far, since nobody has made any points that weren't deliberately dorogotory. EXCEPT for gravteck, who I agreed with completely when he said that If America pulled out of Iraq, the result would be another Iraqi despot. I don't recall any point where I said anything narrowminded, or even criticized the arguments of anyone in this thread...only the METHOD of argument, which I'm now backing down from because there's really no point to trying to get through that rock you call a skull, SuPilot. I really wish you'd stop ruining good discussions with idiocy, but you're entitled to your own opinion, even if it is blatantly uninformed.

Let's stop the 'Trash on JD' bullshit, it's not on. Not being able to make your own points doesn't give you any right to attack me personally. If you're going to structure your arguments in ways that are plainly fallacious, I'm going to call you on it (for example, your suggestion that disagreeing with you is accepting a radical anti-bush perspective is both a false dilemma and a straw man, feel free to look those up). In the future, please expect it.

As far as my own perspective goes, I said all I wanted to in another thread, it's entitled 'Mad at bush'. If you want to argue with my point of view, you can search for it, because I don't feel like restating everything every time one of these threads comes up.

Oh, and lastly, Wookie, it wouldn't be ironic even if i was closed-minded, because closed-mindedness isn't by definition related to arrogance, despite recent exhibitions of their coinciding, mostly by your counterpart. ^As I already said, I haven't criticized anyone's point of view in this thread, only the ways that ceratin people have expressed it: fallaciously. I'm surprised you didn't read my earlier posts before passing judgement, skiinstead, and a bit disappointed, since I mentioned you in high esteem earlier. I'll say it one more time: I don't disagree in the least with gravteckès points. The US shouldn't be deciding on the future government for the Iraqi people, but neither should they let them immediately elect a new dictator. It isn't yet time to leave. I didn't agree with the war, but now that it's over, it would be nonsensical to let what good came of it go to waste by allowing Iraq to revert to a dictatorship, especially one with even greater animosity towards the US, the latter having recently invaded them. Eventually, a largely benevolent, democratically elected official can be found, and hopefully Iraq's citizens will recognize that such a person better serves their national interests than a radical fundamentalist, which is, no doubt the sort of person they'd elect now.

we are also rushing the time period that Iraq has to come up with a constitution. 6 months of work to determine the rights of Iraq until the end of time is not suffificient. I think that before Iraqis elect a leader, we need to tone down the violence that is going on, because currentlyl, if sum1 is elected into an office in Iraq, they will face violent opposition and possibly terrorist threats. Overall, Iraq is just a hard place to deal with, and i wish we would've had the foresight before we got into war.

Im not saying that your idea is worng either or that you are some kind of shameless liberal with no pride. Im just saying that whenever these threads do come up (which i agree i hate re stating myself because, no one would care anyway) i try to stay out of them. Sometimes you are extremley close minded and it makes it hard for anybody to offer a different oppionon. Nobody does in fear of being attacked by not you, but the many many many others who don't know a thing about politics, and it makes it pointless. You just latley from what i have seen have made no attempt to keep it civilized. SUpilot neither. But anyway if we are gonna debate, lets keep it in the DL.

Oh and by the way. Im only 16 so anybody who wants to debate it up a little, PM and a 16 year old kid will destroy you. LOL. I know there is alot older pepole on this site that think they know more than anyone else just because they are older. Well try me.

well then what are we supposed to do? you good at pointing fingers, but not at coming up with solutions. if you think that the US is the only country involved in the rebuilding sequence of iraq then you are very illinformed. countries that didnt even support the war are helping to setup the new government, among other things. you should know this. you need to report on the entire story instead of always pointing at the US. other counties want in just as much as the US does...
