for a powder only ski i would go wider (depending on how much you weigh), for an all mountain ski its touch fat, but will still be great in powder.

go wider. my all mt. ski is about 98 while my powder ski is 112. i would go a minimum of 110 underfoot for a pow ski

In short, if you know how ski then yes, 98mm will be enough to ski pow. Obviously it'll be hard to ski deep, heavy pow pow but if you know how to ski powder you shouldn't have a problem.

think about it. how wide were skis 10 years ago when people were going out into the backcountry? 60? 70 maybe? you can ski powder with any width, you just need the technique.

Its funny how skiing and skis have changed. 4 or 5 years ago 100mm under foot was a "snowboard", and everyone thought it was just plain stupid or silly. Way before that, 70mm underfoot was huge, beyond comprehension to some who grew up on straight wood sticks with no edges, no base, upwards of 230cm long, and anywhere from 40-60mm underfoot. Nowadays "all mountain" is considered around 100mm underfoot, and powder skis are generally 110mm+, 120mm and 130mm being common. Thank whoever you want to for the progression of gear, but in short Yes, 98mm underfoot will do just fine for powder days.
