Cleaning a pipe

here's my problem. i have a pipe that i brought back from Belize that has a bend in the stem and a clog right at the bend. white vinegar won't get it, hydrogen peroxide hasn't done anything. what's the best common household product for breaking apart a clog in a pipe?

try a pipe cleaner to break the clog.

then just use a guide to fully clean it. I would get a link but my moms behind me ha.

get rubbing alcohol and soak it in it.  Otherwise look up bong cleaners on the interweb but it is all just basically rubbing alcohol

Do not boil a glass pipe EVER.  It can cause the glass to become brittle and crack.

Put the pipe in a ziplock bag and pour rubbing alcohol into it so it can cover the pipe.  Then put salt in the bag.  There should be enough salt in it that it stops dissolving.  Shake it up.  Let it sit, repeat.  Depending on how dirty it is you may need to empty out the bag and do it again.  You may even let it need to sit overnight.  After that you can soak your pipe in warm water for a while.

Boiling pipes = no problems. Be gentle. Duh extreme temperature changes can crack a pipe in second, we all know this.

Makes it brittle, etc.


Put a old rag in the pan so the pipe is never banging against cast iron steel....and boil away.


Now that you've done that, get alcohol and RICE! Rice works AWESOME. Now not all pipes fit rice, and if that is the case. I generally recommend soaking your pipe in alcohol for a period of 4-6 hours, and it will get everything loose and really oozing out.

If you have the tools and you have air compressor, blow the hell out of the resin out of that pipe.

yeah coarse salt is the way to go, not TABLE SALT.

Yuo need something abrasive that doesn't dissolve. coarse salt will disolve, and rice will get soft. so they both have downsides.

but rubbing alcohol is king.

Get a zip-lock b ag, put the pipe in it, pour rubbing alcohol into the b ag so th at the pipe is covered in the alcohol. Then add t able s alt to the b ag. Put this b ag into another so it doesn't spill all over. Sh ake the b ag until the piece is cle an. Pour out the dirty solution into the toilet. Rinse the piece with w ater. Smile.

rubbing alcohol is the mos effective method, I've tried them all. take my word for it.

And PLEASE,  if you decide to do something else, DO NOT use the drano method, especially since its a wooden pipe (porous!). Do you really want to smoke drano? (A few kids on this site probably should now that I mention it though)

in fact because i have never cleaned a wooden pipe, disregard my comments. soaking your wooden pipe in alcohol and then lighting it up probably ain't a swift idea.

In all seriousness, I dunno with wood...the alcohol or boiling method could "cook" resin in to the wood...as well as remove it maybe? I dunno...I never had a wooden pipe to clean.

you might be right. The alcohol could dry out the wood too.

And since the wood is porous the resin is probably "in" the first few mm of the wood, rather than just on top like with a glass piece.

You're probably better off getting a new glass piece to be honest. I got one I can clean and ship to you if you want haha

Something abrasive like a pipe cleaner could remove it.

But it seems boiling it could cure it in to the wood? I dunno...

The best solution is rubbing alcohol + salt.  The rubbing alcohol loosens the resin, and the salt provides an abrasive agent.  This wont work all the time though, especially if you have a sherlock or something that pinches at a point.  For really tricky pieces like these, the best plan of action is to fill with rubbing alcohol + salt, shake around, and let sit.  On the first try it probably won't even go all the way through.  After a half hour, hour, whatever, run water through it at high pressure, like a hose or something.  This will blast out some resin.  Repeat, you may have to like 5 times.

If its really stubborn try boiling it in a pot of water for 20 minutes or so beforehand.

Or if you are really desperate buy Chronic Orange or some other pipe cleaning solution, but these usually don't work any better than rubbing alcohol.

i would recommend simple green. soak that shit for a few days and then run warm water thru the pipe. everything should come right out. that's what I do with my glass sherlock. works like a charm every time.

what the grasscity shit said...
soak your bowl in rubbing alcohol in a baggie for a couple hours. q-tips work good in the bowl and if you can get it into the pilot and mouth that works too. if not the ink tube from inside a pen is easily manueverable, or a pipecleaner. rinse/burn off the bowl before you smoke again or your gonna be getting some chemicals
