DISCLAIMER: I fully support Level 1 Productions in this case. However, I don't think that boycotting the company is the answer. While it is an enticing idea, it will not do anything to show the magnitude of this case or the closeness of the skiing community. In fact, I believe boycotting the film would cause some deep rifts to form in the community. But if we do this, we may just bring the community closer than ever.
Violence or even picketing isn't the answer. By doing that, you're doing the same thing WMEG is doing. Ideally, we should support the movie by going to it. Go to the movie wearing a t-shirt that says something along the lines of "I support L1P." Don't talk shit about the movie (Dynasty) or say anything about Refresh. Just go to the movie and support it - for Warren Miller (the person) and for the athletes in the film. You don't have to like the production company. Also go to your local Level 1 premiere of Refresh and support it. Again, don't talk shit about Dynasty. Just go, and (perhaps more enthusiastically) support Level 1, Berman and the athletes.
Think about it; this is an IP lawsuit. They are suing L1P because they think that by including an interview and voiceovers with Warren Miller, Level 1 is causing irreparable damage to WMEG. By supporting this movie (even for this ONE LAST TIME), we would be showing the fact that the ski industry is small and supportive of each other. Sure, there's competition, but it's mostly friendly competition. We'd be showing them that by including Warren Miller in Refresh, L1P hasn't decreased our interest in WMEG's films; but rather, increased it.
Do this or don't participate in the Dynasty premiere (whether as a fan or as a picketer). Protesting is NOT THE ANSWER.
i just bought the ns tall tee from the ns store and i have a screen printer at my store so im gonna put
"I
Support
Level
1"
on the back, if anyone wants screening done pm me
This is what I mean. It's important to not necessarily picket but also support WMEG. That's not to say their movies don't suck, but, I mean, it's an IP lawsuit. They're suing because "Refresh will cause irreparable harm to WMEG." By watching Dynasty, you're demonstrating that Refresh does nothing of the sort.
Just by looking at that schedule I can see that the company is run by dumbasses. A premier in Santa Barbara? Really? No premiere in my city an hour away from the hill, but Santa Barbara is like 2-3 hours from any skiing. Fuck WMEG, their loss. I wouldn't go anyways and their movies are shit.
I get your point about a rift in the ski community, but that does not mean we should in any way support WME. For one, they make terrible movies, so for that reason alone people shouldn't go. Second, most people going to the movie are probably unaware that warren miller isn't involved or that WME is suing Level 1 for working with the real Warren Miller. I agree, people shouldn't be violent and/or rude, but peacefully and respectfully picketing and providing people with important information is, well, important.
I don't know. Sure, their movies suck, but I just don't think picketing is the answer. It makes the situation just a bit more stressful and hard on L1P. That's not what skiing should be about. Yes, the lawsuit sucks and is a terrible move by WMEG, but that doesn't mean it automatically authorizes us to stage protests against WMEG. Support L1P as much as possible, yes, but protest against WMEG, no.
So what I'm saying is, don't picket "against WMEG," picket "in support of L1P."
Maybe I am just confused by what you mean by picketing "against WMEG." If by telling people the facts about the situation in a polite manner is picketing against WMEG, then I don't see a problem. It seems that you are conflating the terms "picketing" and "attacking." Picketing doesn't need to (and shouldn't be) done in a disrespectful manner. People should know what the company that they are supporting is doing to the ski film industry when they go into the movie.
No, you're describing exactly what I mean. I guess I just don't want to see people at the Dynasty premieres with signs, gear, etc. that says something along the lines of "WMEG are liars," "WMEG sucks," etc., because that would be bad for the skiing community. Whereas presenting the facts as they are, unbiased, would be the way to go.
I'm still a fan of the idea of someone pulling a Kanye in the middle of the film. But only of the idea, not of having someone actually do that.
I believe he just said that picketing shouldn't be done in a disrespectful way at all. And you're still interpreting as he's planning on doing disrespectful things.
I believe all he plans on doing is printing out fliers explaining the situation. Many people attending these premieres have no idea that Level 1 even exists, so I believe he's planning on simply telling them about Level 1, and what's going on regarding them and WMEG.
There was no mention of calling WMEG liars or saying they suck.
