HOW TO EFFECTIVELY BOYCOTT WME

Everyone is chomping at the bit to figure out what THEY can do to help in this WME v. Level 1 Productions lawsuit debacle. People are talking about making a ruckus at WME events, boycotting, telling their friends and family not to support WME, and all kinds of other things. That's great, but the best thing you can do to help Level 1 is to support their movie.

Now, that being said, if you really want to hurt WME, all of these ideas flying around might work... but to make a big dent you need to go after their sponsorship. Here is a list of their film tour sponsors in the US and Canada, and their contact info. I suggest you send an email to EACH of them.

What to do is to send a brief, politely written e-mail or letter that says the reason you're emailing; for example, that they are a sponsor of Warren Miller Entertainment, and that Warren Miller Entertainment has launched a frivolous suit against Level 1 Productions, which is bad for the sport. Then explain that as long as they support WME, you will not be buying their products, and will tell your friends, family and associates to join you in this boycott.

I doubt that they will have the same confidence in WME after a couple of weeks of being bombarded with these boycott emails.

and the very least is that they will reconsider sponsoring WME in the 10/11 season.

I just emailed Nature Valley and General Mills. Their policy at the bottom states that " in any event, any suggestion is not submitted in confidence and General Mills assumes no obligation express or applied by considering it. Without limitation, General Mills shall exclusively own all now known or hereafter existing rights to the suggestions of every kind and nature throughout the Universe and shall be entitled to unrestricted use of the comments for any purpose whatsoever, commercial or otherwise without compensation to the provider of the suggestions."

I thought that was kind of silly. irrelevant to the WME vs Level 1 but i emailed!

I’m going to keep this concise and to the point. Being sponsors of Warren Miller Entertainment, you should know that they are currently bringing a lawsuit against Level One Productions. Being it that this would be terrible for the skiing community, I am forced to boycott all WME films and their associates. I will tell my friends and family to boycott all companies who support them (including yourself) and although it is not directly your fault, I am forced to do so. Thank you,

I also received a reply from Time4media - it was the same generic rubbish that I have seen posted here. My reply....

"....under a common sense of fairness, WME believes it imperative to retain control of the use of the Warren Miller brand."

Ok, I can understand that you want Warren Miller's voice to be identified solely with the Warren Miller Entertainment brand. That's understandable and I accept that is part of business. But where is the common sense? Level 1 never set out to say "Hey, Warren Miller is in our new movie!" They hid the fact from their audience that he was even playing a part in the movie. It was something special for a group of people (skiers) that are long term fans. They don't want to steal your market share - they just want to make movies. 

I am but one consumer, but rest assured there are plenty aware of this situation now. The free skiing community is small in individual nations but large as a sum of its parts. I live in Australia so my diet of ski films in the past has consisted almost entirely of Warren Miller films. For 25 years I have lined up for premieres with the same excitement and fervour. With the advent of the internet and the ease of online shopping this is changing yet I would still line up, year in year out. With this single move WME will alienate itself from not only me, but the wider free ski community and forever damage its reputation with up and coming fans. Whilst I would like to keep watching the movies, I cannot abide these kinds of thug tactics. I am not alone in my feelings.

The best case scenario (in my opinion) would be for WME to withdraw the case, apologise in a public forum and then get to work promoting their new movie. Learn from what Level 1 and the other film makers are doing and employ some dynamic, young film makers and athletes to help out.  There is money to be made but it must be made ethically.

F**k sprint and jeep and other massive companies - they don't care.... you MUST MUST MUST express your concerns with Colorado Tourism.... Tourism is the backbone to the CO economy and that tourism is skiing- people come from all over the world to ski in colorado and currently one of the sponsors of WME is colorado tourism... i read Ski magazine today - total gaper fest, and it's all about the best resorts in colorado and america, and it's also plastered in WME ad's for dynasty and WME Tshirts and shit... you need to stop that!!! Level one promotes colorado, colorado skiing and the colorado ski industry (including movie companies like LEVEL 1, msp and wme (cocks)......

Get on there case - there (WME) actions are directly damaging the reputation of colorado's Ski industry.... get them on your side and it's the Biggest win you'll have....

good effort all though, i'm proud of skiing right now... more then ever

Guys if you follow through and start sending out emails, please take the time to use punctuation, capitalization, proper grammar, and other things that make you seem like an educated individual.  If it looks like a 4th grader wrote it, how much impact do you think it has?  Make Level 1 look good!

Now I had to leave a fake telephone number as I dont currently live in Canada, (im from the UK) although will be in Canada soon so I told him he can contact me in the UK if he still wishes too or I will contact him again when I get back to Canada.

I also added that "I only hope you decide to pull your support and sponsorship from WMEG as soon as possible to further prevent any more damage to your brand"

Hopefully the guy contacts me and I will express my opinion as clearly and professional as I did in the original email and maybe we can make a point. If people go at this in an immature way then its going to do more harm than good in most circumstances.

So far that's the only real reply Iv got other than the generic ones already posted.

Hopefully L1P comes through this stronger than ever.

To whom it may concern,
     I understand that your company is a sponsor of ski film company Level 1 Productions.  As you most likely know, Warren Miller Entertainment has launched a frivolous lawsuit on Level 1 regarding copyright infringement.  This lawsuit is ridiculous and unfounded, and as a member of the skiing community I see it as an affront to everything that this tight-knit community stands for.  Just about all of us in this community are fans of Level 1 Productions, and are hoping that the court rules in favor of Level 1.  I wanted to take the time to thank you for supporting Level 1, especially in this tough time, and to tell you that your support has certainly increased my respect for your brand.  When buying new equipment in the future, I will certainly take this support into account and will tell my friends and prospective customers of your service to the industry.

I know this is a tiny thing but Ski Magazine has a fan page on facebook with a fair number of fans (no where near as many as Freeskier).  I'm guessing a lot of them are NS people because we'd "be fans" just because it is skiing.  I'm trying to figure out how to pull my name from the fan list...we should all do that because if they see a sudden drop in fans by a significant number, it is another way we let them know.  Anyone know how to "un-fan" ourselves?

Hi,I understand that Colorado Tourism is a long time supporter of Warren Miller Entertainment. I had been planning to take my family on a vacation to Aspen this winter. However, due to the fact that WME has filed an ungrounded and ill conceived lawsuit against my favourite motion picture company, Level 1 Productions, I have decided that my money would be better spent elsewhere. I would appreciate you looking into the ethical conduct of the companies you support before you make advertising decisions next time, as to consider the financial implications.Regards,Dave C

I cannot emphasise enough how if you want to make the biggest impact, get on the back of Colorado Tourism....  with the economy as it is, CO tourism is relying on a busy season of both American and international tourists travelling to CO resorts to ski/board & the CO ecomony relies on it.  This lawsuit is directly impacting colorado tourism, and the CO tourist board needs to know how you all feel as all these companies are based in the state....  they openly support WME, where in reality the likes of L1 and MSP probably do more for promoting colorado skiing then anything whereas this lawsuit is generating massive negativity - people see WME and Colorado Tourism on the same page of adverts together.... that sucks....  I saw that on a g*y dynasty advert and I realised that CO tourism should be backing all these companies or none at all. Especially not ones that seek to undermine the very essence of the sport that the state relies on finanically...  hit em up.... I have.

It has recently come to my attention that Corona Extra is a sponsor of Warren Miller Entertainment. 

Warren Miller Entertainment has launched a mis-directed and rediculous law suit against Josh Berman and Level 1 Productions a much smaller core ski film company sharing space in a small industry.

I have always supported WME and Level 1 but now choose not to support WME based on the actions taken by WME and the manner in which they have handled thier dispute.  In additon I (and many others in my comunity https://www.newschoolers.com/web/forums/readthread/cat_id/1/thread_id/485021) am choosing to not support any companies that support WME films.  Previously a big fan of Corona Extra my girlfiriend and I will finish what is in the fridge but moving forward now choose Dos Equis or any other mexican beer when in the Island mood. 

Your sponsorship is to capture an audience's ear, but WME has now pissed off a large and growing section of that auidence.  I would encourge you to re-evaluate your "investment."  I hope that I can some day choose Corona again...

Here is what I wrote.  I used my education to justify that I spend a lot of $$$.  I crafted each one towards each sponsor.

My name is Miller Adair and I am an avid skier and fan of action sports in general.  As an engineer at Texas Instruments with an MSEE and an MBA, I spend many dollars inside the industry and with its sponsors.  

 

I was shocked to learn that Warren Miller Entertainment has issued a lawsuit against Level 1 Productions regarding the legitimate use of Warren Miller’s voice in their newest film, Refresh.  In today’s world, frivolous lawsuits dominate and destroy our legal system.  I feel that this lawsuit against Level 1 for including the man, Warren Miller in their movies falls into this category.  

 

As a result of this lawsuit, I will be actively boycotting Skiing Magazine until this lawsuit has been dropped.  I travel weekly for work and usually pick up your publication in the airport.  Now I will actively avoid it.  Thanks for your time and I appreciate any action you can take.
