HOW TO EFFECTIVELY BOYCOTT WME

Everyone is chomping at the bit to figure out what THEY can do to help in this WME v. Level 1 Productions lawsuit debacle. People are talking about making a ruckus at WME events, boycotting, telling their friends and family not to support WME, and all kinds of other things. That's great, but the best thing you can do to help Level 1 is to support their movie.

Now, that being said, if you really want to hurt WME, all of these ideas flying around might work... but to make a big dent you need to go after their sponsorship. Here is a list of their film tour sponsors in the US and Canada, and their contact info. I suggest you send an email to EACH of them.

What to do is to send a brief, politely written e-mail or letter that says the reason you're emailing; for example, that they are a sponsor of Warren Miller Entertainment, and that Warren Miller Entertainment has launched a frivolous suit against Level 1 Productions, which is bad for the sport. Then explain that as long as they support WME, you will not be buying their products, and will tell your friends, family and associates to join you in this boycott.

I can't believe this man. Ever since warren miller stopped making movies you guys figured hey lets capitalize off of his name and make a quick buck. So when Josh Berman of Level 1 Productions goes out and points out to everyone about how big of a inspiration he is you guys fire back with a law suit? Where is the kid in you? Did you all become stuck up bussinesmen and women when you comprised your dreams to make a quick dollar? I don't get it. Warren Miller is skiing, Josh Berman and Level 1 Productions are not causing anything but positive feedback your way. Do you guys see this as an opportunity to embrace the unity that has grown in our sport? Hell no you figured this punk kid is trying to make money off of our name. I was an avid Movie goer of warren miller for a long time. No i am not some punk park-rat. I live in Pocatello, Idaho i ski the park maybe 1 or two times a day but i hike and enjoy what the whole mountain has to offer. You guys sure have lost my business thats for sure. I always saw warren miller as a cool kind of trip report documentary film company not as some stuck up big time film company that jumps on every oppotunity to make a dollar. But now i do realize that WME is just struggling to stay main-stream and are just about money.

To whom it may concern,

I have recently read of the current legal action taken by Warren Miller Entertainment in regards to Level 1 Productions. In my mind I find this legal action to be the height of idiocy and will henceforth boycott the Warren Miller Entertainment brand and all of their branded sponsors. I have been an avid fan of Warren Miller films for 25 years but will no longer purchase them or attend any premieres. Although this does make me sad, I cannot in good conscience support this frivolous action which can only be to the detriment of the sport that I love.

Just thinking here, what about emailing all of Level 1's sponsors and telling them how stoked you are that they are backing a legit company. If you support Level 1's sponsors then they will be happy and maybe will be able to help out with all this. Even if berman and the crew wins they could be in financial trouble and that is potentially where some sponsors could step in. All the companies that support l1 are legit anyways, sweet, dynstar/lange, scott, jiberish, volkl, freeskier ect.ect

Wow I'm pretty infuriated at all of this.  It just makes me mad that WME would do that to a fellow ski company, just goes to show you that WME has lost its roots.  Good idea for how to go about this, I will definitely do it when i have time and am not half asleep waiting to go asleep.

i think focusing on the ski related companies is key. SKI mag and SKIING as much of a joke as they are....are one of WME's main advertising streams. if we could get SKI or skiing to come out and formally chastise WME's lawsuit/action (or have someone write an article in level1s favor) that would be HUGE. it's something i wrote in my email and encourage you too as well.

Therefore I cannot support you nor can I refer you to friends, colleagues or family until the lawsuit has been dropped. I will actively ensure that Warren Miller Entertainment and its sponsors are held in bad press. I did everything else but the Canadian Corona.. My god, do all American websites have no other choice than "ZIP-code" and "State"? There are other countries in the world you know.

It's crossed my mind...Level 1 seems to be getting a good amount of attention from this they might not have otherwise had. It will probably help them move Refresh quicker...I wonder if this could possibly be part of the plan/ it's more complicated than it seems. Just had the thought. Of course all I know is what I've learned from what people posted on NS.

Just so everyone knows, JEEP is no longer a sponsor of WME. So there's no point in e-mailing them, just send your messages to the other ones.

Apparently they pulled their support owing to the problems in the Auto industry.

I am not one for sending much in the way of emails, but recent events within the ski film industry have forced me to express my frustration. The ski entertainment company that Sprint sponsors, Warren Miller Entertainment Group, has recently brought suit against a smaller company, Level 1 Productions, for what they call “misuse of WME’s registered trademarks.” The statement that this quote was extracted from can be found at http://www.freeskier.com/articles/article.php?article_id=4086 along with a reply by the founder of Level 1, Josh Berman.

The trademark infringement for which WME is suing is the voice over by ski cinema icon Warren Miller on Level 1’s new movie, “Refresh.” This voiceover was never advertised, promoted, or even announced to the skiing community before the video premiered, and has only become known through the spread of information on chat boards and through interpersonal communication between skiers. Level 1 never promoted its inclusion, nor did they step on the toes of Miller’s agreement with the company that now bears only his name.

If a lawsuit is to be brought, it is not with Level 1, but between Miller and WME over a breach of contract. Level 1 is a growing company with a significant and powerful following within the skiing community; they are a small and a lawsuit could signal the death of what they have built.

It is shameful that a company that Sprint sponsors has followed such a misguided and damaging approach to this issue. Sprint has linked its brand with WME, and because of the reckless and immature handling of this dispute I will no longer be using Sprint’s telecommunications services. I shall also recommend that my friends and family follow suit. I appreciate that Sprint cares about skiing enough to sponsor a part of the ski industry, but the current choice of WME does skiing no favors and only serves to tarnish the brand name of Sprint.

Everyone: don't copy other peoples' emails. There's no point if it isn't written in your own words. That being said, if you write one email (it doesn't have to be long), you can send it to all of the companies on that list (except Jeep, as I mentioned) and just substitute their company's name and their products in in each case. So you don't have to write out a separate e-mail for each, though if you want to and have time, go for it.
