Nikon vs. canon

just a quick thread, need some opnions on which company would be better for a starting slr camera, im looking into getting one

rebel of d40. it's up to you. i would personally go nikon, but not everyone will. go to the store and put them both in your hands and see what you like better.

personally id say nikon. but you just need to hold them both and see which ones feels better. ask any photographer, and they will mostlikely do what we are all doing now (tell you what they preference, but then tell u to go see which one you like more)

for an intro nikon, get the D40, and an intro cannon, the Rebel.

Hate lower end canon's. Love higher end. I'm a nikon guy myself. They seem to fit my style more. They're pretty comparable through the range though. It's really personal preference. Go try them both and see what fits you.

and as far as bodies go it doesn't really matter but at the end of the day i think that canon lenses take the cake

What are you going to be shooting?

Stills, Scenery, portraits, ect - Nikon

Action, motion, skiing, ect - Canon

But its really all preference.

How would a body have any effect on those different types of shooting?

In the end, it makes no fucking difference.  Buy a body, buy some nice glass, shoot photos.

canon usually has settings that favor shooting action and nikon has some that favor stills, ect...

but your right...either camera can take amazing types of photos either way, it depends on many many other things. Of course good glass contributes and mainly just being a good creative photographer no matter what your using.

The reason to buy an slr is so you can CHANGE the settings. And a body makes no difference in any of those. Lenses, possibly. But both make some amazing lenses.

yes.

but whatever brand  you choose you will probably stick with for life.. if you plan on being something in photography, then go test out each brand. If your just taking hipster photos for your flickr or facebook then go buy whatever you get a deal on.

the D300's auto focus is awesome and any other Nikon above that.

I will make it quick, if you go Nikon get a D3000. The guide feature is nice. It tells you what settings to do what. Like freeze action-> person running or car driving... and then tells you what to do. Also the Question Mark button. Any setting you dont know what it is, press the ? and it tells you what it is. However I find Canons menus easier.

I've shot with the Nikon D60, D100, D300, and the Canon Rebel XT, XTi, 20D, 30D, 40D, 5DmkII, and while I think the image quality is more or less equal (especially considering photoshop), I think the canon cameras are arranged in a much more intuitive way in which you are less reliant on the screen to get the shot you want. As far as the technical aspects of photography goes (setting exposure, white balance, ect) both nikon and canon physically work in the same way, it's just the way you enable these settings on the camera that is different. I think the rebel's are great cameras to learn on. They're dirt cheap and take great photos. I'd recommend picking up a Rebel XTi with the stock lens (18-55) plus a 50mm f/1.8, It's a cheap setup that will be great for learning.

but do you not agree that this thread is pointless? Would you really tell someone that they need to go out and buy a camera with out them holding and experimenting with the camera first?

Now I can see threads such as what glass should I get, or is this worth the upgrade, but such a broad question such as Nikon or canon in which the OG poster has given no more information or preference to what the pictures would be for is a useless thread. I felt that since she linked her facebook in her sig, that the photos final location would be there, and that she wouldnt be doing any paid work in which she would need a good camera. So I then simply told her that she should go with whatever camera that she can find a good deal on.

I dont feel as im being extremely sadistic, Im just giving my thoughts with out all the fluff. I do not think what camera she gets will matter in the slightest to her. I also do that think that buying a D60, just "for fun" was just either. Flame me.


(here comes the "OMGZ your a doucherz why do you even carez!" comments.)

I totally disagree. Almost all the people in my college classes who shot another brand (Sony, Pentax, etc) struggled to use a Canon whenever they borrowed one and found Nikon's much easier to use.

fuck not again.

personally, i prefer Nikon (both lenses and bodies). i just think that Canon is kinda cheap. hate the interface and just dont really like their cameras. canon makes pretty decent camcorders tho.

if you want an entry level DSLR, get the D5000. its a pretty decent camera. and as an added bonus, its got video :)

Brand doesnt really matter, at the end of the day it all depends on the skills of the photographer not the camera. you can get good cameras from a lot of brands. I personally use Canon but thats just because I like the interface better than Nikkon and I struggle with Nikkon and figuring out their manual settings. you should be shooting in full manual anyways so presets shouldnt be a part of your decision. both camera companies are innovative and seem to have similar amounts of users. But i'll end my meaningless jabbering, it all just depends on what you like...  sorry if I wasn't helpful

it really is a personal choice

I like Canon's lenses and the feel of their camera's, but I'm biased because I'm a Canon user

make sure that your really decieded on which brand before you buy, because your probably going to be using that brand for the rest of your life

how can you call a canon L lens cheap? it's certainly not in price...or bomber build quality...or insane sharpness

just go to a camera store, try everything, see what you like better
they're different, yet similar enough that one is not better than the other

To me, the real magic is in the glass, not the body (assuming both have comparable specs). And last time I checked, Nikon had better glass.
