Critique my night photos

Kinda infatuated with nighttime photography at the moment; tonal ranges, different temperatures of light playing off one another and watching what the camera can see when to me it seems just darkness.
Tell me what you like, what you don't like and feel free to post any of your shots or any dope nighttime shots you've seen.

In the future if asking for critiques it usually helps to post fewer rather than more pictures. With that being said though I really am digging your work. I especially like the composition on the green hedge picture, as well as the one with the out of focus grass in the foreground. Your exposures are done really nicely too.
That last one is sweet too, get a great feeling from it.

good point, but I'm also looking for broad conceptual ideas: along the the lines of "I see you've tried this and that but have you thought of trying to shoot this or that?"

i really like all of them acsept fot the green hedge one. the subject is too straight forword for my likeing, but i see where you were going with it. maybe a different angle? and the first one is great. really like the lightin and the graff. all others are gold as well. nice work. maybe some more in the future?...

word... I really only like it as sort of a faux-landscape, almost like a hedge mountain. However I do see how its a bit on the mundane side

most are clickin in around f/11.. have to go for something kinda in between. I need the longer depth of field because focusing in the dark is pretty damn tricky but also cant close all the way down because max shutter speed (besides bulb) is 30"

I really like the skate shot, #7 I think. It is different, takes me a second to figure out what is going on, yet still has a clear subject.
captures the moment and feeling of late night skate sessions for me.

I shoot with a slightly older Canon 20D (got it in 2006) and I took the last photo by dragging the shutter (using a flash with like a 10" exposure, so it freezes action on the person and then I used city lights behind him to create the lines of light. I managed to keep his face area free from the lights behind him by holding my thumb over the approximate spot on the lens where his head was.)

All of em are taken in Vancouver except for the the 2nd and 3rd which were taken on the Transcanada highway in Ontario and Alberta respectively.

with the shot of your car, i think that if you didn't have the car inside lights on it would look even sicker, with the red light streaks coming through the car windows

Yeah I see what your saying, but I would still like it more if the whites matched up.

As far as a critique, youve posted too many for me to be specific; but I like the car self portrait,skate shot, and last shot. The car shot was pretty unique, only grievance is what Ive already said. The skate shot was also well done, I agree with what he ^ said, solid choice on shutter speed, not too slow or fast. The last shot I felt was also pretty unique, I like how what you did with the background lights. All the shots have something small that I liked about them, besides the first, Im not a fan of all. Too cluttered and no obvious subject.

1st one, quite cool but nothing special

2nd, cliche photo student shot

3rd, Just bad.  Uninspired

4th Legitimately really good, I love this photo, it is really amazing

5th Interesting

6th Stupid, pointless

7th Very cool, understated, I like it

8th I assume its photoshopped somehow, in which case it is mediocre.

Overall I'm pretty impressed. Its very hard to break out from good but standard to really something special in photography, and in your 4th picture, you really have.  It is seriously excellent.  In photography, 1 out of 8 is incredibly impressive.

i think that the seventh is my favorite, the isolation makes it interesting

also the 5th might turn out a bit cooler if the subject was a little more desaturated or completely monochrome

with that said, i really like some of those photos

8th isn't photoshopped, as you pointed out in your next post. I created the block over his face by basically dodging the bacground lights out with my hand on a shot where I dragged the shutter. f/11 8" with the flash on. Could see how the 6th is pointless, just liked the lighting, texture, and the illusion of the hedge being a mountain. To call my self-portrait uninspired is a bit odd, I took it a 3:30am while driving cross-country having not slept for 36 hours. It captures me alone with all my stuff piled in behind me, truckers passing me by, and using construction lights to illuminate my car; you may not like it, but uninspired, I disagree. The 2nd, I get what your saying, that there is nothing too special about a passing vehicle on a long shutter, just thought that the different colors and strictly linear composition of the lights merited a closer look; apparently you disagree. Thanks for taking the time to say something about each of the shots.
