Why do some skiers act "gangsta" or "ghetto"?

I have always wondered, why do some skiers dress in "ghetto" clothing and acting "gangsta"? Its not like i am against that in any way, but i find it sort of weird. First of all, i have never seen actual gang members from say the bloods coming to ski, and shredding the mountain. Most skiers are white, but i still see the n****r word used on some threads, which is really disrespectful against African Americans. As I said before, i am in no way insulting any skiers, I just dont really understand where this "ghetto" thing came from in skiing, and why it has become so popular.

When people go to the mountain its a time to have fun. Sure, in real life your not a gangsta, but when you go to the mountain why can't you be? Why not have a little bit of fun and dress up like a gangsta? Personally originally I just wanted to look different from every other mom dad and family at the mountain. By rocking tall-t's, jerseys, and ridiculous colors I stood out from the crowd. It just matched the type of skiing I was pursueing. I'm not saying I was the best at the mountain, I was far from it. But compared to 95% of the mountain I was doing something (as a skier) that was completely different from most. It became a community thing were I would know who is a 'freeskier' by their twin tips. But then everyone got twin tips so in order to form a community where people could recognize other, a gangsta trend developed. Ofcourse music was also a huge influence. But know rappers and a lot of black people want to have that ed hardy rock star look.

Its funny cause know when I go to the hill I look like everyone else in the park.

too lazy to read everyones post but just my two cents. not everyone is trying to act "black" or whatever you wanna call it. some of us like the feeling of super loose clothes and tees that are 5 sizes too big. if you go watch a ski video, would you rather watch it of someone with clothes that fit them and has some oldschool tunes, or a video where someone wheres tall tees to there knees and slays like a mofo while having some dope hip-hop tunes playin?

to wrap it up, "gangsta" or "ghetto" looks a lot smoother than normal sized clothing.

to seriously answer you question i would say because kids from the suburbs wanna be like black people and the ski hill is the perfect place to dress/act gangster cause there is almost no risk of getting your ass kicked for it

every little white boy likes to wear a tall tee and be a thug every once in a while (including me) so why not do it at the ski hill? simple as that

Like you said, there are no black people on the slopes, and since there are no black people, the white skiers have assumed the position of "The people to be scared off when walking the park" (no pun intended)

And just to be more scary, we wear longer and baggier clothing so we skinny white boys look bigger and badass cause realistically We are still just Rich skinny white boys that are scared of the true black people who wear similar cloths but actually stab you will a 'pole' rather than talk smack about doing it.

I don't think i act ghetto or gansta, but I definitely listen to hip hop (atmosphere, murs, living legends). I also don't wear tall t-s but I do wear my outerwear pretty baggy and the reasoning for that is cause i'm 5'7 and only 110lbs and I hate looking like a skinny twig on skis. It looks so awkward.

I think some people just really get into the style though. I don't blame them except when people where massive tall ts. I feel so much better going off jumps listening to hip hop and moving with the music than I do listening to Muse. So maybe people are just doing that to an extreme and end up acting gangsta too.

Mary, you're way cooler than me. Maybe Gangsta Golf is the next big thing and Tiger will show up at the Masters wearing baggie pants, a Tall-T, a hoodie, A flat bill and a bandana. The whole fashion part of freeride cracks me up. On a pow day, you could put me in a pink one piece and I'm going to have fun.

Last year I didn't have to coach one day and it was a sick powder day. All I had was my uniform which I wasn't allowed to free ski in. I borrowed a coat and pants from a buddy who out weighs me by about 50 LBs. The shit was way baggy on me, and it was probably the only time in my life that I looked like I had any sense of fashion on the hill. There was a girl that we were skiing with. We were riding up the chair lift and I made a joke about being able to fit two of me in the pants I borrowed. She said that I could get into her pants any time I wanted. I kinda laughed thinking she was joking, but then she gave me this look and said "Seriously". I told her my wife probably wouldn't think that was cool.

Anyway, I guess chics dig the thug look.
