I'm lookin into purchasing the 20 dollar spicolli pole of backcountry. i'm about 170 cm and want a small ski pole (meaning not 90 degrees). theres 110cm as the smallest size. will that be small enough or would i have to trim it.
take a pair of poles you have lying around and if they are too tall just find where on the pole is a good height and measure that, but im guessing 110 is pretty big, thats 43 inches for us US folk
yes, just take the grip off (close a door on the twist and pull) then use a hacksaw to trim it up (I recommend using masking tape to mark off where you want to cut - cutting above the masking tape) and don't forget, when you measure the handle is going to be on there too.
So you're about 5'7", correct? Same height as me, cool. I like my poles to work, so I usually get 46 in. poles (115-117 cm) You don't want 90 degrees, so I'd say anywhere from 90 cm (35 in.) to 95 cm (37 in) should work. That being said, I have no experience with using baby poles, so if you want shorter just buy the 85 cm ones.
i'm 176 tall, and ride with 95cm scott poles, i always cut poles down to 95, perfect mid length, although most people would consider them short, i hate long poles.
if you cant get them in that size, buy longer, then measure up from the tip of the pole and mark where u want to cut, then saw there with a hacksaw. then put the piece with the grip on, spray some sort of lubricant inside, clamp the piece of pole in a metal vice and pull/twist off the grip. next spray the inside of the grip with hairspray and slide it onto your freshly cutdown pole, voila!
