The Fountain

It just amazes me that the surrounding nebula was an actual chemical reaction. Not to mention it adds so much to the message of accepting things in the state that they are and letting nature run it's course. Maybe I'm weird but I was just completely taken by it.

Yeah I couldn't even make it through the whole movie I was so fucking bored. I'm sure it's good and has a whole bunch of awesome symbols and a good theme but damn is that a slow paced film.

Maybe I'll give it a shot another time. I just wish I was warned before hand that I should only watch this movie if I was in the mood to analyze shit and think.

Yeah, it was definitely a lot to take in in one viewing. If you watch it again try to notice all of the triangles in the past, the squares in the present, and the circles in the future. All of the painstaking details are amazing. Even the body positions of Tomas, Tommy, and Tom Creo (past, present, and future). In the past (Izzi's memoir) Tomas is always leaning forward, showing his fighting, conquistador mentality. In the present Tommy is often seen in a sort of question mark position. Leaning on his desk bent over the monkey, etc. This is to show his uncertainty in whether to comfort Izzi or try and save her. Finally, in the future Tom is in peak physical condition and shaved his head showing his new spirituality and determination to reach Xibalba. It's pretty ridiculous the steps Aronofsky took to make even the subliminal things impact the film.

Very well might be my favorite movie, I've recommended it to so many people.

Everything about it fascinates me,  its a great blend of plot, human emotions, nature, and so many other elements. 

Didn't know the fact about the chemical reactions...thats really cool.

Technically, they did use CGI, but not in the same fashion that most directors would have approached it. Instead of creating fakey graphics from scratch (*cough* George Lucas *cough*), they superimposed microphotography into a digitally rendered 3D environment, which is why this movie had the most photorealistic space sequences I've ever seen.

Aronofsky also said that many of the shots have a cubist composition to them. Like how half the shots involve a circle in the center of the screen, with lines jutting out from it in every direction. He used these types of visual metaphors to accentuate the thesis of the film. He also choreographed many sequences so that the characters would be walking towards the light source on the set, signifying "the light at the end of the tunnel" effect.


The Fountain used to be my favorite movie (from a filmmaker's perspective), until I saw The Fall. Some of the filming has a similar kaleidoscopic feel to it, although Tarsem's style is more minimalist and surreal.
