Getting Busted Downloading a Movie

Today i got an email from my internet provider saying that there was a complaint and my ip adress was being used for copyright infringement, i read on to see it was one of the movies i had torrented and let seed for at most five minuits. I'm only posting this cause I've never heard of anyone else getting busted, and a buddy of mine has downloaded way more movies and stuff than i have and not gotten busted, its BS.

you must've dled something that was being tracked. i recently got a notice for using too much bandwidth, but it was just their bullshit way of trying to get me to stop downloading because i've never exceeded 1Mbps on any of my applications.

delete the movie, email em back with a huge bullshit message about how sorry you are, then delete your browsing history, delete your download history, then re-download it. (delete again after you started downloading)

yeah happened to my friend. he was downloading a heroes episode and the internet service provider contacted nbc (think thats the tv network that makes heroes) and they called his house. they just said it was some dude stealing their internet and downloading shit, but you got to be careful if your downloading entire movies or tv episodes

yeah no im just mixing things up sorry. Your Ip can be changed but I think that when you do change it they still know its you because the locations will match up and your service provider will know who you are and be able to lead who evers gonna getcha to you anyways so no reason to fuck with it.

your ip address is furnished to you by your isp, you can change it and fool a dumbass

your mac address is physically attatched to your network card, you can change that to a fool a little bit smarter of a dumbass

why not try using peer guardian, google it.

I just use the paid version of malwarebytes, protects from everything, including the IP address. I know I've downloaded stuff with tracking on it but the program blocks all of it with IP protection.

This guy knows whats up.  PG is an excellent tool for those less than savvy.

delete the movie, it may have a rootkit installer in it.

email back and deny everything (the more aggressive the better, but don't get vulgar)

they have no way of proving (short of seizing your computer and finding copyrighted material) that you were not used as a surreptitious proxy by someone who may have infected your computer.  (around 25% of all web connected computers are infected with some sort of malware.)

In the future, use a VPN!!!!

a couple years back in college a buddy of mine got busted a few times dling on the campus network.  he just bought dvd copies and said he was just downloading for backups, he already owned the movies.  that seemed to work for him

Your Ip can be changed, but as you said it is logged by your ISP so they will know who DL'd.
You can't just change it to whatever you want though, it's still assigned by your ISP to your modem/router.  Your computer IP which probably is like 192.168.x.xx is entirely different and only exists within your network (on your side of the router, not the Internet side).

I work at an ISP. Yes..I receive the e-mails from the RIAA and MPAA daily notifying us of customers abusing the service.. You are NOT IN TROUBLE. Charter, Comcast, and all providers will send you a nice little "Caught ya" letter basically syaing please do not be a habitual offender.

After the third time in a short period of time most ISP's will cut your service. If the MPAA or Paramount Pictures or whoever sends me 3 abuse letters all about you then we simply cut your service. You are no in trouble.

You are only in trouble if they issue us a subpoena, in which case we have to give up all your information.

What you are looking at is what the ISP received from the MPAA saying hey we caught your customer here...DL'ing such and such and the ISP forwarded it to you....so the ISP can say hey we don't care what you are doing, but these peopld do....and we have a policy to cut your internet after X number of violations.

Yeah they are a bunch of bullshit. And this is from someone working at an ISP.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD CHILD PORN. ALL THE PEOPLE WHO I HAVE SEEN GET IN SERIOUS TROUBLE IS FOR CHILD PORN. The FBI will come a knocking with a subpoena on our office doors....and someone is going to jail over it.

Last year i was downloading a fair amount of music in my dorm, and eventually I received an email saying that my school's ISP was aware of my illegal behavior. It was only a warning though, but they said if I continued my internet service at school would be banned and they could press charges.
