Its probably because Cinco De Mayo sounds a lot like 4th of July... everyone who grew up on sesame street knows what 'cinco' is in spanish, and "mayo" is a pretty blunt cognative of "May", sooooo yeah..

Ask anybody who doesnt know spanish how to say sixteen, and they will just guess 'sixteeno' or 'seisteen' or something stupid like that.

Also, its a reason to eat mexican food, drink tequila and tecate n'shit, and NOT have to celebrate their independance day... it would be 'unamuricun' to do that... (even though theres absolutely NOTHING ELSE going on in september, so why the fuck dont we?)

The biggest South American holiday has to be on Sept 7th... Brazil knows how the fuck to party... and would certainly trump those conservative chileans...
