hotels aren't really that expensive if you are splitting them between a few people, and there are tons with good deals in slc because it is a vacation destination town.
another option is this slc hostel
the ski shop next to the seven eleven is the lift house, but it is impractical to go there for canyons tickets unless you get them the day before. you pass it on your way to brighton though, so it would work well for that.
canyons sports, rei, etc.. all offer discounts.
check ski utah's website for more ticket pricing info.
