That is a really crappy policy, but for somepeople it may be ok depending where they are fleeing from. It provides the poor refugees with food and housing. But the best thing would be if Australia would set up camps with husing and food for them where they could live at least partially free!

Unless they catch you smuggeling in, then you could get thrown in a special prison or something. But Canada's immigration policy is prettty easy though, unlike the states. But i don't mind. There is a bit more of a security risk, but if it means staying away from a police state then it's ok with me.

I wish the US would adopt a tougher refugee policy. Hell in Philly you don't get kicked out if you are illegal and you commit a small crime. Granted it sucks that these people have no where else to go but I also don't want my hard earned money paying for their welfare. If you are going to come to the US at least do it legally.

Immigrating legaly isn't always an option for people. In countries like China it can be really hard to get out of the country leagly if you're poor, Most people would rather come over legaly, it's cheaper and alot healthier (no if your confused how poor people would be able to afford to come illegaly it's because they are normaly forced to work off their debt in sweatshops or brothels or something of the sort). But our immigration policies do need to change to take into account the poorer people who want to seek freedom as well as terrorists who abuse the system.

The thing I didn't understand about our policy is the way that we have to keep refugees for 3-4 and even more years, but when the Tampa crisis happened we managed to palm some of them off to NZ who were kind enough to take them. NZ processed their lot in about 5 weeks and had them all fixed up, but the people that we kept are still waiting in detention centres. I think its inhumane. Many of the people are asylum seekers, not illegal immigrants trying to escape war. I think if we're joining most of the Western world in bombing the crap out of their countries then the least that we can do is give them a safe place to live! Sorry, but I needed to vent about this- good topic!! There has been so much debate about it in Australia, its kinda getting out of hand!

Yeah, it's really hard for some people to immigrate from their countries. At my school, we had a presentation from a lady who escaped from Iran during the war.. She was imprisoned for a sentence that she wrote one day in school, 'What does life really mean?'
Isn't that crazy? I can't imagine living in a place that didn't accept freedom of speech... I'd have to get out, and I'd do anything I could to escape. It wouldn't matter to me if it was legal or not, I would have to get out..

I dont like the immigration situation. It really sucks that other countries are poor and theres opportunity here, and everyone should have an opportunity to make something for themselves, but eeeeeveryone comes to America. I dont know, its like were shelling out so much money for immigrants, for their healthcare and other shit. Its like America is supposed to be the melting pot, but that pot is overflowing, and its spilling all over the kitchen man. Its such a wierd subject, I mean America was founded by immigrants, and further populated by immigrants. I think America has reached capacity, from an economic and employment standpoint at least.

You should just be happy to already be a citizen in a country that a lot of people want to live in. (I'm sure you are. Americans are usually *very* patriotic. It's a great quality.) I feel that way about Canada... I do agree that sometimes it seems bit crazy. I don't mind though, as long as it's giving some other people a chance at a free life.

It made me really sad about a month ago when I heard on the news that one of the refugee's children asked if flowers existed in Australia. That day the detention centre distibuted flowers to all the kids. They won't even let them out to go to school now, and I think thats horrible.

It's seriously horrible. It's in the papers here. I was reading about it earlier today. I can't imagine anyone having to live like that...

Well our prime minister is an idiot! Sorry to anyone who likes John Howard, but as my grandfather says, 'he's an evil little man'. My friend's uncle is an ex-prime minister of Australia and he left school at 15. If this is all it takes to run a country, who are we going to get next??

you are a champ Phattsarah!! i totally agree. i saw that there has been a video released from a detention centre showing the refugees trying to commit suicide and stuff like that. now if that isn't the act of a desperate person i don't know what is. and what about those photos of the two adults and the kid in the water that was supposed to 'prove' that the refugees were throwing their kids overboard off their boats and when they released the whole series of photos it showed that the boat was in fact sinking! and about John Howard, he used to just be a paradigm of stunning mediocrity but now he has really turned evil and if he is really reflecting the attitudes of the electorate, well much as i hate to say it, i am ashamed to be a part of that electorate. oi, Timmy can i come to NZ?
