Canon hv 30 or 40?

alright so i'm buying a new camera and i have my eyes on the Canon hv 30 or 40. Is there a big difference? Please help me out here guys, thanks

Why are you looking at the hv 30/40? Is becasue of hdv (tape)? Why not look at HF s100 with internal flash memory?

I am in a similar possition to you and i am looking for a camera in that price range. I no tape has better editing properties but flash memory and software has come along way. Most software supports most formats now adays.

Other advantages with flash is there are no mechanical parts moving. I am concerned about things getting broken with in the tape drive etc... where as the flash memory cameras seem to be the future, even manufactures admit this.

I dont think the HV40 has changed much since the orginal HV20 came out which also suggest that the use of tape within the consumer/prosumer market is getting faced out? The new hf s100 has a much larger CMOS sensor as well so for the same money you can have a better camera that is smaller, lighter and less prone to braking.

This is what i have read so far and i am still yet to make a descision so correct me if i am wrong?

i would stick with the 30 if your going tape, basically the only difference between the 30 and the 40 is easier 24p, but thats not important anyways. I love my 30 and tape really isnt that bad. Flash mem might be more convienent but tape has great quality. Its nice to just be able to pop a tape out and its archived forever instead of constantly clearing your mem card.

BTW, whats the bitrate of the HF s100

hdv tape is a little better quality than flash memory.

Everyone claims they have their footage backed up with tapes, but after a couple years of filming with tapes, no one wants to reimport/try to find shit plus i know a lot of people who reuse tapes to save money. At this point in time, buying extra externals and backing up your footage is 10000 times easier.


As for bitrate and quality with the two, i believe that hdv is 24mbps? flash being 24-25mbps? JVC is claiming a flash camera with 35mbps. Just go with p2 with the 70-100mbps :).

Taping over tapes causes drop-out and glitches i've never taped over a tape. Anyway the difference between them is native 24p on the hv40 and i think the record button is different... No big differences at all but on b and h the hv40 is cheaper.. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=hv&N=0&InitialSearch=yes. Don't worry about the tape deck breaking it's a new camcorder vx1000's are still widely used in skateboarding and there 10 years old or more.

i think i'll just stay and get the hv30, thanks for your opinion. 

I have a mac and was going to get final cut pro possibly for free.  But for now i just have imovie.  what's the best program you can get for a  cheap price or possibly for free.

well, kinda, you log and transfer and it converts from mxf to mov as you transfer to FCP. You cant just click and drag, but log and transfer is basically the same.

hv30 is discontinued. the hv40 is the new line.

you can still buy a 30 (or 20) and many people think its not worth the money to get the newest model, especially since theres such little difference
