The american way vs the european way of parenting

it seems to me that in america the trend seems to be to spoil the fuck out of your kids, teach them that there is nothing to worry about when they are kids, and then kick them out when their 18.

while in europe they dont spoil their kids,  they show them what the world is really like from a young age,  but they let them stay at home as long as they want without there even being a discussion about it. in fact in italy a huge percentage of people live with their parents.

which would you prefer?

i would prefer the way that I was raised. I was not spoiled, I was shown that life requires very hard work and dedication to be successful, and while my parents could have given me the stuff I wanted all the time, they chose not to so that I would learn the value of working for things.

I was not kicked out at 18, because I wasn't an asshole, or spoiled. I went to college, got a degree, and now I am working towards supporting myself, with their help along the way. I do realize that this is spoiled to some people, but it's all your perspective so I don't mean to offend. Anyway, I wouldn't change a thing. I'm happy.

this is such a vast generalization, and I'd argue that you couldn't be further from the mark. This whole discussion hinges on which part of the country you are talking about as well as the belief systems of each parent. Kids down south and out west who grew up on farms sure as hell weren't spoiled. Most of them had to work their asses off every day of the week to get by. I'm from Massachusetts and enjoy a very comfortable lifestyle, but I have not been spoiled at all. Compared to other people, it may seem like it, but my folks pounded the tenets of hardwork and modesty into my head from a very young age.

I hear what you are saying though, there are some parents who constantly coddle their kids and teach them that they can't do anything wrong. It's a disease that is ruining the younger generations of this country. The real problem is that this type of shit will extend into subsequent generations, as the brats of today will most likely breed the brats of tomorrow.

i would go with a blend of the two. teach the kids about what the world is really like, don't spoil the hell out of them, but still have the expectation of leaving the "nest" at first chance, while still providing some financial aid for a few of the young adults expenses and other challenges associated with moving out.

I think your being very general about things. I think parents in England are TERRIBLE. You see kids smoking at age 8, or being held on by leashes. They are either super strict, or wicked lazy. I think everywhere is sort of different.

My parents were pretty strict with me, but understood that sometimes I needed my own freedom. They would allow me to do many different things, but I got the shit kicked out of me when I fucked up. It was simple. I was scared of my dad. But now that I can talk to him, I sort of know why he did what he did. He kept me in line, and im a better man for it.

I found that being raised in the country help me be alot more independant then alot of kids. I got to learn how to drive at a younger age, and was very comforable around machines early on. When it came time to get my licence it was very easy for me to drive on the road, and passed everything with no difficulty.

When i moved out of my house, and started living on my own it was not as big of a deal as my other friends from the city. I knew how to do laundry, to cook/clean for my self, and to handle my financess. ( i know spelling, but im french so im going to blame it on that) I was thought those things at my house pretty young. I didn't really have video games, and just played outside in the woods alone alot. That freedom just allowed me to be comfortable alone.

I think that its not just parenting, its a whole structuralization thing.  In Europe, you are expected to have your life pretty much planned at 16, because thats when school actually starts being meaningful.  You can drink at 18, smoke at 16, and gamble at basically any age (18 is the legal limit but they have these things in arcades that are essentially gambling where you win quarters). 

My parents pretty much let me do what I wanted once I turned 16 and got a car.  I still live at home but I'm in community college so its hard to keep a full time job, and my car payments are sort of high because it goes vroom vroom.  As long as I'm in college I can do whatever I want, and they help me out with my car insurance and some other shit, but I basically buy everything for myself.

For me, the definition of spoiled is you don't have to work while your in college.

Saying that all american kids are raised spoiled is a big overstatement. I wasn't raised spoiled and neither were the majoriy of other people I know. Europeans are lazy socialists whose society is going to slowly colapse upon itself.

your american view is very, very skewed.

Me and my brothers have never been spoiled. I still do not own an xbox, and over time i thought me that there is better ways to spend my time. My parents don't buy me tons of clothes, especialy designer clothes.
I have been taught very well how to handle and save money. and so i dont spend that much money

My oldest brother is 25. he went through 6 years of schooling, won countless awards for advertisements he created, and has gotten job offers left and right. He took an "internship" at this great small agency in LA but they hardly even pay him. My parents still support him, and he hates that. My parents didnt kick him out on the street at 18... in fact, they would love for him to come back and work in NYC so he can live at home (for the time being) and see him more.

i was brought up in a privileged home but not spoiled and i've always been somewhat of an ambitious person but my parents have supplied me with what i need and the agreement has never been that it's okay to stay until i'm 40 or that i'm out when i'm 18. the general expectation in my family is that you move out a few years after college. i have a 40 year old cousin who has never worked and lived off his parents accomplishments and he is so scorned upon that he's motivation enough for me to gtfo and do shit and not live at home forever.

from the europeans i know i agree that the parenting over there is more matter of fact and would be viewed as 'harsh' in america but those kids turn out so level headed. although i think it's a bit much to generalize like that, i know some europeans who are spoiled as fuck and some americans who have been given nothing, it's a pretty mixed batch from my experience
