Are all the good skiers skiing the bumps?

I had this discussion with some dude on the lift the other day, he was saying that the best skiers on the mountain were skiing the bumps. What do you think?

The bumps are a very specialized form of skiing, it isn't like ripping pow, it isn't like a groomer (at least not what i've seen). In my opinion that isn't the case, the best skiers, are doing big mountain... and there are some very talented skiers in new school, and racing. Im sure there are some great bump skiers around, but i find it hard to believe that they are the best, it is such a one dimensional form of skiing that it makes a claim like that a little obtuse.

Probably the point is good skiers ski everywhere, so a guy skiing moguls porbably can ski anyhill he wants. But look at Glenn Plake. Skis everything thats the best.

check out the thread 'mogul skiing' for more on this.. im a bump skier, and there's a hell of a lot of awesome bump skiers i know, but there are also a lot of bump skiers that are shitty at everything else.. but then again that goes for freeriders and racers too..
personally, i think the best skiers are the ones who can do everything. you have to be versatile to be the best. like henrik windstedt.. good all around skier.

the best skiiers on the mountain are the ones who can do anything, and know how to master the mountain

the best skiers can ski anywhere, but the point is that skiing bumps makes you better. my friend can make some beautiful big mountain turns but he blows at everything else, because he can't respond quick enough to the variation of the snow - skiing bumps helps make your reaction time consistent.

skiing bumps is probably one of the most physically demanding forms of skiing, because of the amount of work on your legs. There is also a lot of of technical stuff in bumps as well, so it is a very difficult type of skiing, but every type of skiing has awesome skiiers as well as crappy ones.

The kid does have a point in a way if you can ski bumps you can ski anything I know for doing bumps for a few years and all the people on the team just destroyed the whole mountain
Let's face it, no one posts anything serious on NS, and even if I wanted to, it would be answered by some not-so-clever variation of the following:
'You're gay', 'you suck', 'I fucked your mom last night', 'Eat shit', 'fuck you', or my favourite, 'I'm a better skier than you'. Jib_This

For those of us that don't ski at places like Jackson Hole or Squaw, moguls are often the most challenging areas.
Where I ski, big mountain doesn't exist. Neither does glades or powder. Therefor I ski the park and I ski bumps. What else am I going to do? Spend all day on the groomers?

that comment is shit, bumps, big mountain, groomers, pow, park, theyre all different types of skiing, theyre uncomparable, well maybe some are, but you cant compare park to big mountain or bumps and it goes anyway you arrange those

I think that you can compare all types of skiing, it all basically is balance and turns. if you are an incredible racer you can probably get down the bumps just fine. For example, I watched Wisi Betschart, a US TEAM racer & world cup guy, ski down the moguls. I was completely amazed how he worked his feet.

dude, TJ Lanning (Al Lanning's older brother.. he's a US ski team racer) was really good at bumps, i was impressed. but he kicks ass at everything so ya know..

I saw Picabo Street run the bumps in Utah a few years ago. She wasn't lightning fast or anything, but she was definitly solid and had stamina like a mofo.
I've also seen some lesser skilled racers look pretty rediculous when they decide to take their cocky asses down the bumps wearing skinsuits.

I wish I could ski moguls better. I've improved a lot though. I hardly ever get to ski good moguls or any moguls at all.

I find that if you rip up the moguls, you look REALLY good.
Mogul skiing tends to be something that not a lot of skiers become VERY good at. The average skier is certainly not a good bump skier. I just think that if you rip the moguls, it definately looks good.
Skiing is technique; all you have to do is practice and master the different forms of skiing.
We'll have you dead pretty soon.

Every really good bump skier I know is always a good overall skier. But there are tons of park skiers and racers who cant ski out of their element. (sorry for the sterotypes, of course this doesnt apply to every skier, just a generic observation)

i don't agree with a mogal skier being a better allround skier, you can't ski the whole mountain with your feet glued togethor, but the bumps do help with balance and the ability to absorb terrain, a racer stance (yes some racers can't ski all mountain just like all other skier types) seems to be the better stance to get you better at all mountain, a more balanced position on your skis with your feet wider apart and the ability to get your legs out from underneath you, thats just my opinion

try a triple daffy and you will discover that moguls not only help your skiing but your park jumping as well. WOOOOOO HOOOOOOO! yay for moguls.

thanks liam..
hey powder99, yah thats true about the stance, but uh, im a mogul skier and i only ski with that stance in the bumps... its about being versatile and taking different aspects of your technique to different terrain.

look at jon olsson, he was a racer and not a bumper and some can argue he's one of the best out there.
i think racing helps you more in the pipe than on jumps because it teaches you to work your edges
