Alta or Snowbird

My friends are taking a senior ski trip this winter and luckily enough i get to tag along. They are thinking of these two Resorts, which do you guys think is better?

If you have to pick one, I'd go with the bird. Similar snow, better cliffs and more options. Easier to figure out what's good. Alta's goods are largely hidden to the tourist and the best stuff is really sidecountry. Plus if its super bad conditions there is a park at the bird even if it is really crappy. Bad days at Alta are just high speed groomer laps.

This is pretty true. If you try hard enough to find the goods and follow around locals that know where they are, you can find the goods at alta. Snowbird is a little more straightforward. However, I've only ever been skiing one day where the snow was deeper at snowbird than it was at alta.. which seems strange because they are literally touching each other. But that's the way it is. On truly epic days Alta would be a better option.

agreed.

though i am an alta kid, so i have a bias for them. however, it's true about it being harder to find your way about as a tourist without anyone local helping you.

i would just go for both if you can

It's totally true that Alta gets significantly more snow. Over the season Alta ends up averaging sometimes 100 inches more. That said, you are not going to notice the difference between 24 and 30 inches of blower when every run at either mountain are going to be the best runs of your life. What is more important is figuring out which way the storm impacted the mountains and ski the windloaded aspects which will be noticeably deeper.

people are saying that you don't need to choose, or buy a combo pass, but that costs more money. So, there is indeed a reason to choose: For the sake of not spending more money. I choose every year.

Only got a day at Alta and a day and a half at Snowbird but I liked Snowbird so much better. At Alta I felt like you had to hike to get to anything decently good and most of it wasn't even open. They just didn't have that much steep terrain and it was all very long traverses to get to. Snowbird on the other hand seemed a lot larger and was a lot steeper and just a lot more expert terrain to find. Snowbird park is worthless, two boxes and two 5 ft jumps, don't know why its even mentioned.

Oh the best run at Alta was the 'Keyhole' which is a run from the top of the Wildcat chair in which you go over that ridge to get back into snowbird. Incidentily, it happens to be a run in Snowbird. Supreme lift was my other favorite part but I didn't want to waste my day hiking into Catherines.
