Skis for my dad?

Hey NS me and my dads girlfriend want to get him some new skis for 09/10 season. he is 6'2", 200 pounds, and a expert skier. He is a solid powder and all mountain skier but he excels on piste. He is currently on next years Atomic race 12s, he is EX dartmouth GS skier, so i would say that is where he excels. He is sick of skiing powder on his race skis (he always did a pretty good job with them) and he wants to stop getting race gear and get some good all mountain twins. What do you suggest?

SO: a ski that carves well that can ski all mountaint well and occasionally powder. im thining salomon Lord? what do you guys suggest?

get him some k2 kung fujas'
theyre rockered for pow, but not too much that it screws you up in pack, from what ive heard they are pretty much the best all mountain twin tips around

Prophet 90s, Prophet flites, or maybe even the 100s. They seem like a good ski for an older person wanting an all mountain twin. They have metal in them (not the flites) so they wouldn't be noodles. I saw an older dude ripping through all kinds of stuff on the 90s, but i'm in NJ so not powder. I could imagine going from race skis to 90mm waists would make a huge difference though.

Just my 2 cents, That's probably what i'd by an older person if I lived somewhere with pow.

the volkl bridge is a great ski, me and my dad both ski it.

he would hate the kung fujas, its way too soft, the bridge has a nice poppy feel, with a pretty adequate sidecut for decent on-piste carving. the 92mm waste will tear up snow as deep as he wants it.

i'm an ex racer myself so i think i have an idea what your pops will like.

VOLKL TIGERSHARKS!

i have a pair, haven't used em in like 2-3 years because PA sucks, but they're are amazing. but they are an extremely fast ski and if he is into that then i can't see any reason for you not to choose them. ok yes they are kinda pricey but volkl makes such a solid ski that it makes up for the cost.

i would say the Line Prophet 90s or like the Dynastar Big Troubles. the big troubles are a very good powder ski but dont have any rocker so they still work fine anywhere else...

I would say get something that is a stiffer ski since I am assuming your dad isnt going to be going into the park at all, or if he does very little. I used to ski the 06/07 Volkl Dogens and they were great for the all mountain. I think the 2009 Dogen was renamed teh Volkl Ledge. Also I know that the Volkl Mantra is a great ski. There is a guy in his late 30s that skis them and he says that the Matras are his favorite ski of all time just because they are great on groomers and in the pow(96 underfoot)

both kung fujas and bridge do well in pow but the fujas may be too soft for him. the bridge can definitely charge and it is fairly stiff although it doesnt have rocker. id say dont get the lords i personally feel this ski is a major waste of money. they advertise its rocker as its selling point but in reality the rocker is very minimal. plus the ski isnt even 90 mm in the waist so i cant see where they get off marketing it as an all around ski. plus its extremely pricey and salomon isnt exactly the most legit company right now. id say check the bridge and fujas out in a store and see what he likes after all hes gonna be the one riding em.

Tigersharks are the antithesis of a park ski.  NS really amazes me sometimes.  Get him on the prophet 100s and call it day.

ON3P Wrenagade. 113 underfoot, rockered tip and just a straight twin tail (no rocker). Rips groomers, is quick edge to edge considering its size, and kills pow. Decently stiff, and super responsive I think it would make a great ski for an aggresive, older, ex racer looking to step up his pow game without having to compromise his groomer, trench laying, on piste killing passion when he wants to lay down a few big GS turns in between laps. ^ wrenegades sound sick, or some k2 seths... def check out some prophet 100's or some line blends, i've seen tons of old timers rock those two models smiling from ear to ear. really stable and versatile skis, and if he wants something skinnier he might wanna look at prophet 90 or the chronic kryptonite even... all of these skis are killer allmt planks.

Lots of solid choices already mentioned, but I'll throw in the 187 Dynastar XXL (109mm in the waist) for east coast, otherwise he might prefer the 194. Should be able to score an unmounted pair for under $400.

Yeah since your dad is an aggressive skier and used to skiing on race skis, i would definately reccomend a ski with metal laminates, or atleast a fairly stiff ski. Most race skis are made with titanium or ti-alloys, for stability and you can really 'load' the ti skis up.

Volkl mantra would be a really good choice, has dual ti laminates. (Nordica makes the supercharger enforcer, which is a really similar ski to the mantra, but usually will sell for less) Line prophet 90 or 100 would be decent as well, with the single metal laminate. I've got some Atomic Crimson Ti, as a teaching ski, and i love ripping on them. I haven't been able to find the speed limit yet (i got over 100km/h at lake louise, according to the garmin haha) and they actually ski really nice in the powder (for being 86mm waist), nice and soft in the tip=floaty. My dad is about 200lbs and an aggressive skier as well, he skis on the Nordica Hellcats and loves them. They have a titanium mesh laminate, so you get the torsional rigidity with less weight, and they're 90mm in the waist

they arent twins but my dad got a pair of dynastar legends last season and he loves them. he says theyre perfect for all mountain, trees stuff like that

depending on how much your father rides pow I would either get profet 90s or 100s from Line.

Personally my brother likes the Profet 90s the best out of the two since he feels he has alot more control carving on regular pistes.

Same situation for my dad last year he was on some narrow Heads and wanted a wider ski to ski powder so we got him Line Prophet 100's and he loves them cause they carve well on groomers if he wants to and they float great in the pow.

All have some element of rocker, are pretty solid all around and rip in the pow. As much bad stuff you hear about the new Gots i really liked them, much more than seths and other similar skis.

he can ski it as hard as he wants on groomers and it still has the width for the loose snow and pow. tested this ski last year and it's a shitload of fun.

im thinking about the oneps for now, and price is not really a problem within reason because he will use these skis until he dies. btw hes 62 years old, but still absolutely rips and is in fantastic shape.

Go obsethed. Seth morison used to be a ski racer but went into pow and park. Not saying your 63 year old dad will ride park but these skis will fit him well

i agree with anyone who said XXL's.  if your dad is used to a race ski he will feel right at home on an xxl, and that ski can kill it all over the mountain, powder -crud - hardpack whatever.

Francis Bacons!!!

They have the sickest turn radius for a ski that wide underfoot.... it's like 14m or something, pretty close to a GS ski anyway! They are super easy to ski all mountain and when the fat stuff comes they are the best ski's on the planet - no question.

prophet 100s, rossi s3 or s5, on3p jeronimos, volkl matra/gotama.

thats enough choices... now to narrow down.

prophet 100s, s5s and mantras dont have rocker- mantras also have very little sidecut to prevent hooking in powder but their on piste performance really lacks. s5s are def softer than the other two and are more jib-centered. prophet 100s have a sheet of metal and an elliptical sidecut which really kills it on piste, while the width and strength make it excel in all other conditions. out of those prophet 100s for sure.

s3 is again the more jibby of the rest, softer flexing, but a good shape and 98 underfoot. the jeronimo might be the most killer, the feedback i've heard has be great, although i've never skied them. between that and the gotama, they're gonna be on the stiff side. the new gotama has a cool shape and prgressive rocker, but again, haven't skied it, so I cant give firsthand info, but it fits the bill too. of the rocker, i'd say on3ps would be killer, best deal there.

now, decide rocker versus chambered and you know my recommendation

Of everything I have researched this summer, nothing sounds more fitting for your dad than the ON3P Wrenegade.  Read one review about them and you will likely agree.  Other good choices would be Prophet 100s, Kung Fujas, VCT Turbos, CRJs would be great too.
