NZ the next Mt. Hood?

alot of hype about new zealand and all the training going on there. I think that soon its gonna become the next mt hood.

well hood goes off before the season in NZ properly starts going off. so i would assume hood > nz would be the pattern

pros have always gone to NZ it just seems like more of them are going now and it's getting more exposure. NZ is more of a summer place for pros due to how expensive it is to fly there and all of that. Nothing will replace Hood though... it's in the US and you can drive there. Not to mention all the camps and shit.

to go to hood from the east, all you need is a $200 plane ticket and some hot dogs. you can hike the mountain and ski, and stay on couches very easily. I imagine that it might be more difficult to go to NZ. so no, NZ is not at all the next Hood. Hood is the only Hood.

Dorey told me that Hood was an awesome place to train if your just doing slope, but the pipe in NZ is the best for training early season

I've lived in New Zealand all my life and I love the place, wouldn't trade it for anything.

BUT

There is no way it can be the next mount hood. The skiing here is awesome, but it's not as consistently awesome as what you get in the states. We get pretty average quality snow, and not that much of it. Also, the vetical lift here isn't that huge because our (skiable) mountains top out at about 2300 metres.

Come down here in your summer though, you will have the dopest time... on and off the snow!

I would way rather ski snopark then Hood during the summer. But a return flight to NZ is like 1600 bones.

i paid 1100 from Denver, with how expensive camps are if you already know what you're doin you're better off just coming down to NZ and shreddin pro or not.  The parks are pretty sick at Cardrona and Snowpark plus you have more options for when you want a break from training including heli skiing, BC and just sick lines in general (depends where you are). Skiing from June to Sept/Oct in a sick country beats skiing a glacier or leftovers.

I have spent my whole summer/ kiwi winter down here and so far it has been ill. The quality is a little inconsistent but its all good really. I wouldnt recommend coming down here if you are looking for the mt hood style training and experience but the scene is certainly a little sicker than whatever is going on in Govy. Its a whompin good time and I would reccomend it to anyone who has a few extra bucks lying around......but dont make my mistake and try to get a semester of Uni out of it. Just shred

It seems to me that NZ has better public parks than mt hood. Snowpark NZ and Cardona seem pretty sick while I've heard only bad things about the MT Hood public park. I might be wrong because I've never been to any of these places...

For me, it is hard to complain about the public park. Take it for what it is. You are skiing in the summer! Sure it's not manicured like Windells but coming from the midwest, I was happy to be skiing. I didn't think it was too bad either, just not a lot of options.

Skiing NZ would be all time. Could somebody build a Wal Mart and public camping close to the mountain for me?

New Zealand is on the other side of the world.  Their winter is our (United States/Canada) summer.  I would hope that at the height of the season, their resort parks would be better than the Mt. Hood public park lane.

Also, pub park isn't that bad.

i live in NZ it is the shit dope parks at cardys (cardrona) snowpark and now the remarkables has "the stash" and if you want to ski big MT the Canterbury club fields have more than you can shake a stick at check out www.templebasin.co.nz and www.cragieburn.co.nz these are as close to back country you can get with out skins or a heli and those fields are dirt cheep to ski $60 NZ for a day pass for a adult under 13s ski free and those rope tows might give you an idea about how to make your own ski field on a budget and there are soooo many virgin pow days at temple the only down side is that you have to hike up for an hour to get to the field but the upside is that you can stay on the ski field and there is night skiing they say that you can get fresh tracks three weeks after a storm and they let you build kickers where ever you want what more could you ask for new zealand we love you and you will never have to drive more than two hours from an airport to get to a ski field nowonder i live in new zealand

The whole its another country is nothing. NZ is so chill. Way more chill then the US. I hitched to the mountain every day of the season. I will most definatly be back next season. Its not real pricy either. I got a free pass and worked for accomidation. All I payed for was food and beer.
