Taking time off from college.

i always heard that at least statistically the chance of you going back is very low.  i know of 4 people that took a year off...  none went back ever.

I'm moving to New Zealand to work abroad for a year and everyone is tellin me, "Don't do it! You'll never go back!" Fuck that! Do what you want to do.

Well assuming you're going to a 4 year school, being 22-23 isn't too old to travel at all.

well keep in mind if you aren't going to school full time and your over 18  and your job doesn't have health benefits, you will have no health insurance

should have added a disclaimer to not turn this into a healt insurance reform debate cause you know it will.

well anyone reading this, the qoute, and my original post know that this is not a debate on health insurance.

Why don't you just graduate and then fuck around for a while before getting a real job? If you can afford it, i'd highly recommend studying abroad as an alternative to taking time off. I went abroad to Greece and then traveled a bunch afterwards and i got college credit for doing so. I'll probably do it again before i graduate. Bottom line is, make finishing school a priority because that is your ticket to doing basically whatever you want.

i dunno man, i did it.  i took a year off, moved to the mountains, worked just enough to pay my bills and skied everyday. 

honestly, it was the best decision i've ever made.  i went to school for 2 years before i took a year, and was just kind of cruising through all my classes, getting okay but not stellar grades, didn't really give a shit about any of my classes - basically, i only had enough ambition to pass tests, but not enough to focus and get an education.  not to mention, i didn't have any idea what i wanted to do with the rest of my life.

i got the same shit from all my friends about "you'll never go back" and whatever, but honestly, i'm in my senior year now (my second year back), have a 3.9, and actually care about learning.  i really enjoy school a lot more than i ever did before.  also, i have much more direction in my life, and career goals and such.

anyway, i guess it's not for everyone, but it definitely changed my life and me as a person for the better.

so this will happen?

Exactly. I had this discussion earlier today with a friend of mine, he argued that he wanted to take a year off after graduation and "experience life while I'm young." All my friends who have taken a year off to ski, travel or "find themselves," has never gone back to school. They all complain about how hard it is to get into school and  how hard it is to find a decent paying job.
