Not to say you need to spend three bills but the answer to your first question is bindings really, really matter.

Think about it. How much do you value your knees, your legs, your life.
As long as your thinking about cheaping out on bindings, dont buy salomon, they are a waste of money

if you're gonna buy marker, don't buy their cheap models.  they break.  guaranteed.

If you plan on falling or landing hard ever then bindings do matter. Lots. You can avoid some nasty injuries by a good release. With the re-release of pivot heels I could see them being a good option.

Go on google and search for last years' bindings. I bought PX15s with XXL wide brakes for $160. The bindings retail for ~$300 + $50 for the brakes.

the funny thing is i know someone who actually did that.. first pair of skis and boots and when they both fell apart, he screwed em together as a momento

Yeah the "p" series Look bindings, so p12s p15s p18s etc. Not the "px" series.

Rossignol FKS

Those are the pivots I know. There are some older ones but I am too much of a noob to know them

depends. its not so much a safety thing as some are saying, and in fact, $$ race bindings are usually less likely to come off.

if you arent riding real hard, a $150 set of clamps like PXs, z12s, etc will be more than enough. good bindings are important more so when your riding really hard, and need them to hold up, and hold you in. for example, butters are literally impossible on many low end bindings because there isnt enough elastic travel, while in a turntable heel, they can easily be done at a fairly low DIN without worrying about prerelease (alot more to it, but thats the jist of it). metal race bindings are also close to indestructable, and will last just about indefinitely with a little maintenance. So, in the long run, yes, a good set of bindings is worth it.

FKS and all the old Looks. also the original axial series from rossi. watch out for the return of the race-stocks this winter...

these would also result in nim dropping 3 bills. stick with the older pivots from 04 -06 theyre solid and much cheaper than full turntables

so true if its not the "royal family" collection dont get them. i have the griffons and they should last me a while. i skid all last season on them and no signifagant damage just a few scratches. and the griffons only cost $225.

ive seen a griffon heel break clean in two from a smooth rail landing, probs just a manufacturing fault, but its put me off them. I've had the same set of jesters for a year and a half and theyre still going good, I'd recommend them for sure, worth the extra money over the griffon.

meanwhile i've tried to break my griffons and havent been able to, and i've hit them on anything possible (rocks, branches, ice, rails, probably a person or two..) and havent done any significant damage. I'm not hitting anything huge (40ish is the biggest at my mountain) or dropping anything big, but i also weigh 210, so i feel its a pretty good testament.

check out the peak/mojo series as well, in certain models they have the pivot heel

I actually dropped skis/bindings years ago.  I just cement/epoxy and screw my race boots onto 16 foot 2x4s.

and bindings are massivly important.  You don't need to spend 3 bills.  I get my favorite bindings(tyrolia peaks, perfect weight, super safe, lots of elastic travel or whatever) at discounts when they come up.  On here, I scored some Peak 18x($240 or so retail online) for 155 shipped new from Ja.  I got my new Peak 15s for about 165 shipped.  Here is a list of good, safe bindings:Tyrolia FF/RF/Peak/mojo(mojo 15 and 18.  I dunno if I would buy 12s).  Secondly for me is Solly S912/S914, 914 Lab, 914 Driver/ STH 16 and 2010 STH 14(16 toe).

if you aresuper cheap, go to geartrade.  About $100 for Looks, lots of options(other than FKS, the good looks..)

They do matter, but you can get good bindings for a decent price. I got 09 look px12 jibs for 100 new.

Bindings matter a lot, unless you want to ruin your knees. I got rossignol sas2 120 bindings for this year and they got really good reviews.

like everyone is saying, you can get a great rossi/ look/ dynastar binding for like $100- $150. no need to drop 3 bills.
