a few questions:

what will you mostly be using it for? have you ever fired a pistol? stuff like that...

i got a pistol when i turned 21, then decided it was completely wrong for everything i wanted it for, despite it being a perfectly great pistol

ok, i live in WA and intend to get my carry permit in december when i get home from school.  mostly use it for target practice but i probably will have it with me in my truck from time to time.  and i have fired a pistol, .44 magnum ruger 7" single action revolver.

alright, well a couple quick pieces of advice:

stick with a smaller caliber like a 9mm or .40S&W for your first pistol...it's cheaper to shoot so you can shoot a lot and get really good, plus you generally get higher capacity with smaller calibers and smaller cals are easier to control especially for someone who's just learning to shoot properly. not saying you dont know how, but it's a lot more fun to shoot cheap and easy when youre getting good.

get a double action pistol...if it's your first/only gun, this is just preferable

get a pistol with an exposed rear hammer for your first handgun...and one with active external safeties...it just makes the gun safer in a million ways (this means no glocks, sorry)

that's the basics, if i had my first pistol to do over again, these are the things i would have done...i got a .40, but i fucked up a bought a glock...shoulda gotten a beretta or broken the bank for a sig

i will never, ever buy a Glock...  the idea of no hammer in the back scares the shit out of me, plus, i hate how its always talked about.

i was thinking maybe a Beretta M9 or Browning HiPower...  my dad keeps suggesting the HiPower

hi-powers were one of the legendary old school guns, but i dont know if they still make them...lotta people swear by them though, i think EAA and CZ make guns based on them still

get a beretta and learn how to shoot it. we've got a 92 special edition and it's a good pistol, ive just never learned how to shoot it well, im always low and i havent taken it to the range and learned how to compensate for the sights. my dad keeps it in his truck and wont let me run off with it. ill do some more research with that thing in the future if i intend to get one. only 2 beefs with berettas: bulky sights that arent super great (in general) and loooooooooads of empty trigger pull on single action.

might i also suggest a sig sauer p226? im planning on waiting until next summer for my next gun, at which point im gonna buy myself a "congratulations on getting into law school" present...i pretty much already have the 226 elite picked out, just gotta get some different grips for it. it is a fucking brilliant gun, so are the 220 and 229.

so, i will most likely be getting a Beretta M9 or a Springfield Arms 1911 Colt.  the Colt has a grip saftey.  dont know if people know what that means but it means that unless you are squeezing the handle enough while shooting it it wont fire.  almost like a reverse dead mans switch i guess?  i dont know.  plus, my dad wants me to get one cause he hated the one he carried in the Navy and hated it but wants to try a non government issued one.

i like 1911's a lot, but not really for carrying because theyre only single action

dont get a springfield though, theyre not crazy reliable, they shipped out like 5000 of them a while back with no fucking firing pins in them...just stupid

get a colt, honestly, theyre the original and theyre still the best IMO

1911s are semi auto pistols...  the one that was carried in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam dude....  NOT single action.

actually, single action semi autos such as the 1911 are typically carried with the hammer back and the safety on, pulling the trigger brings the hammer home, one action?

i dont know why, thats just how they're classified

double actions are carried hammer down and squeezing the trigger brings the hammer back and then releases it

well fuck me sideways (not you guys, ill get the gf to do that)...  the 1911 has that crazy grip saftey thing that is like a deadman switch of sorts or the saftey mechanism on a nail gun....

i always though of single actions as the type of gun Clint Eastwood carried in the "Man With No Name" series....

yah no big deal, single shot and single action are 2 totally different things, hopefully you understand his explanation

but yah, i know how a 1911 works, my dad still has his from vietnam, i just dont really like them as carry pistols...not that their BAD for carrying, but my perfect carry pistol would definitely have double action, thats why im fixated on the sig p226 or p220

i've been looking into it a lot over the past few months and i really like the idea of the single/double where the first shot is double action but from then on the slide brings the hammer back with each shot

What do you not like about Glocks? We pretty much swear by them. I love that they don't have external safeties. In my opinion, kids should be started young with gun safety and handling. I don't like the idea of having to rely on a safety... It makes people too comfortable, and that's how accidents happen. Personal preference, obviously.

And I love their triggers.

no hammer: it is a striker fire gun as opposed to the traditional hammer fire semi auto answer your question?

to clarify (because i didnt know what striker-fired meant for like a year): in other words all the components to fire the gun are inside the gun rather than outside like you would have with a traditional pistol that has a hammer at the rear, etc.

this means that it is impossible to "de-cock" a striker fired gun without pulling the trigger (to my knowledge, if anyone has evidence to the contrary please let me know) and therefore, in my opinion, somewhat unsafe to carry with a round in the chamber.

for this reason all striker fired pistols (again, to my knowledge) only have single-action trigger groups and not double-action, which i prefer. Wikipedia those two terms if you dont know what they mean.

i know its an older thread, but i just joined the cult. my dad got me this for my 21st, and now hes liking it more than some of his others haha. gonna make custom (probably zebrawood or koa) grips for it next time im home when i can use my dads workshop.
