so i have a '98 subaru forester...
I live in Alaska and this car has gotten me everywhere, its the best car I've ever driven and I've driven it all over the sate in lots of conditions.
That being said, don't get a forester older than anything made in 2003. They did an overhaul of the engine and transmission that year which was a very needed change. I had to replace the head gasket last year, when it went out on me in -30 temps. This fall I was hoping to drive it down to the states but took it in for a check up and was told my transmission was shot. It slips in any gear except 2nd and 1st now. My engine is also on the outs as well as lots of other minor problems, Needless to say I have to get a new car.
Subarus are very popular in AK, but the older legacy and outback as well as the newer forester models hold up much better than the old forester. The same thing with the head gasket and transmission has happened to three other subaru forester owners I know. All these particular foresters are older than 2003.
hope that helps!
