So I'm 14, 5'8", about 145 w/out gear. Last year was my first year skiing and I picked it up pretty quick (By the middle of the season I could ski all the blacks at the local mountain well). I went into the park twice, and hit a few jumps, but nothing big. I want to buy skis this year but I'm not too sure what to look at. Ideally, I'd find some of last years K2 Silencers or something for under $150 bucks and ski those for a year until I find out what I really want to do, but I can't find them in stock anywhere. What I THINK I want is a all-mountain ski, but I know I'm going to want to ski backcountry/pow as much as I can so I'm not sure if I should get something with a little rocker. Unless I find a super cheap ski as I mentioned before, I'll keep these skis until they snap/delam/turn into noodles, so I want something that I can progress a lot on. So what skis should I be looking at?
dude when i was about that age/height/weight I was skiing some volkl Karmas and i LOVED them. They slayed in powder and still stomped in park. They're sorta nearly the middle of the stiffness scale, possibly a little more on the stiffer side, so you can hit the moguls and the groomers with some great edges and response but still flexible enough to stomp the 40 footers. they're like 2004/5 models or something so you could probably get some pretty cheap if you look. I will highly recommend them
Alright. I HATE buying used gear though. You don't know how much it's been abused. I'm liking the K2 Obsethed and Kung Fujas though because they have normal camber underfoot but a slight rocker at the tips.
my first park ski was a silencer, it's an excellent park ski, and it's pretty durable, especially as a first year ski. How deep is the powder you're gonna ski in, I skied them in about a foot of powder and they were decent. You could also look at some Lines, if you can find an Anthem for cheap they'll be good in pow cause they have a 93mm waist, but are SICK in the park, and they wont be noodles by the end of the year cause most likely you wont be hitting very big jumps. Other skis to look at for first park skis are volkl walls, armada arv, and dynastar touble makers, but those are a little more expensive.
The Pow I've seen ranges from a couple inches to upwards of a foot and a half, but that's on popular runs/groomers and not in the area of the deepest/best pow. I think I want a ski that was designed for big terrain but can still hit the park.
It really depends on how many seasons I can get out of them. If I could get more than a few seasons out of them I'd get a more expensive ski but if they're not going to last long I'm going to get a cheap ski I'm going to be skiing a lot of pow, more so than park. 65% pow, 25% park, 10% groomers.
it sounds like the line blend might be good for you, good at a lot of different things with a decent width underfoot for pow but still able to shred park and ski those groomers.
you can probably pick up some outdated trouble makers like the 07-08s or 06-07s pretty cheap and with a beginner such as yourself they will probably last you like 2 or more seasons, depending on how much you progress and how hard you ski, and they work really well as an all mountain tool along as in the park.
The skis youve ben posting youve been looking at are al k2, you might want to broaden your vision and look into salomon, line, vlkl, etc. there are a lot of skis that you could be matched up with
Maybe try and pick up a pair of last year's kung fujas or anthems. the fujas would be better in pow. As for rocker, if youve only been skiing for a year maybe you should put off getting a rockered ski until your abilities improve a bit, otherwise you won't be able to ski pow on anything but rockered skis (they make it like cheating).
If you are going for cheap I would suggest looking around for some old seth's or something. though it might be a little much for you to handle in the park.
I think, because you don't know exactly what you want, you should scope for something a little older to save money, and then when you realize what you like/dislike about the ski you could go ahead and get something more specific.
as for the silencers, they are pretty much a capped version of the old PE from my understanding, and I shredded the PEs for like 3 years, in powder and park. They did fine, and could handle the entire mountain.
Ahhh. I didn't even think about that. I like the look of lots of the Line stuff. The Chronic Cryptonites seem like exactly what I want.. I'll look around at other companies as well.
