Anyone know how to check to see if an ESN # is clean?

Can you do it without switching service? Basically Im looking to buy a Verizon LG Dare and I want to make sure its not stolen. Any way to check?

Just call up Verizon and say you want to check the ESN and usually they'll do it.

ok thanks. I thought it might be that easy. also wanted to see if there was somewhere online i could just type it in and check
