Any kayakers out there?

yesterday i was at ohiopyle a pretty legit rapid system close to where i live and i meant some real cool people down there and we kayaked all day. i was just in one of there extras. but i was looking to get a duckee kayak i think there called, and some gear. any good websites or stores to check out?

I've always wanted to try white water, and at the beach yesterday i saw the sickest boat it was like a whitewater yak but all nice fiberglass and the bottom was super duper flat and had fins like a surfboard he was tearing up some post-hurricane waves it was gnarly. But yeah, whitewater is sick. I go rafting on this river called the rapid river (steepest vertical drop in shortest amount of river in all of newengland) and theres this rock called smooth ledge that creates one of those natural river waves adn theres always tons of kayakers in there doing crazy shit all day long.

NRS is a great website for gear and inflatables. Duckies are pricey unless you get em used and their still pricey then, new ones go for around 800-1200 I think.

Eddyflower is a super good whitewater site that has tons of info on boats and rivers.

American Whitewater gives you great descriptions of rivers and specific rapids all over the US.

USGS.gov has a realtime streamflow feature that allows you to check current water levels all over the US. It's about half way down on the left side of the page.


I enjoy the whitewater kayaking but I'm only comfortable in about class III shit right now. Learned the roll last year and actually put it to use twice already this year, it's a great feeling to pop back up and not have to swim out of your boat as that is a huge hassle. I'm in PA but we mostly stick to the right side of the state, although ohiopyle sounds awesome.

yeah ohiopyle is legit but can get pretty rough at spots.. where you kayak at?

Lehigh river mostly. Lots o small creeks around local when it floods. Ocean for a good time in the waves in Delaware. Sometimes the delaware river if everything else is dry and we're really jonesin.

Have you hit that new whitewater park in johnstown or whatever??? I think it is out your way. It is supposedly a manmade or altered creek that has some play spots for kayaking.

Although those are good, waveskis are better, my uncle used to be 9th in the world at waveskis, and now shapes them, so get a waveski if you want to kayak on waves. Heres a shortish edit on waveskiing (Takes a while to get into it but keep watching, it gets good.)

yea i spent a week on the gauley and new rivers in WV this summer, normally they only get class 4's this time of year but because of the extreme amounts of rain they had to release the damn one of the days we were there so we actually got some 5s at like 3500 gallons per second, serious adrenaline rush...

we did the new river on duckies, all are NRS, they make great gear... pyranha makes great kayaks too

I just started kayaking this year, i got my roll first try, and had it for a little, did some combat rolls. and now i cant roll anymore.

i paddle some class 3, like the zoar gap. i paddle on the deerfield river, and work at zoar outdoor, newenglands premeir shop.

YO ya dude i went kayaking the other day, loved it, dont own one, but im looking into it, ive got a suv, and soon to have a trailer, 4x6, so i should be able to pick up a small one

ya man its wicked fun, aint been to ohio pyle, but gone to canal fulton and mohican on portage? river? its a great work out for sure

yeah you should be good with that but a duckee kayak is super small and i bet you could fit it in the back of your suv

Hell yeah man, here in Idaho we paddle SO much. Even paddle in winter, not me though, that means less skiing.

yeaa, i kayak alot! ive been to ohiopyle, i love that place. it kinda sucks though because nobody ever wants to join me once we go past class 3. when i come back home on break ill message you and well go!

It's "hurry right" on the lower lehigh as far as I know, one of the biggest waves on the lower section.

Never been to any of the creeks you mentioned or the susquehannah. I'm southeastern PA though so that's probably why.

I'd love some info on that play park out in johnstown or somewhere close to ohiopyle, anybody ever been???
