A thread for intelligent people (everyone) about space travel

I liked the idea behind that other thread, besides the fact that it blew and it's subject matter blew and everyone posting in it blew (even me i was drunk trolling when I posted those puppies). But I was thinking about space travel today and decided I should ask everyone on here what they think about it. Soooo

Will interplanetary travel happen in our lifetime?
How will we over come the difficulties of maned space flights?
What are some awesome real concepts about space travel?
Anything else about the subject because it's a good one.

I'll let you guys start and then I'll jump in when I'm not as sleepy

Hopefully there aren't any Sceinentologists (sic) on NS so this won't turn into a religious hatefest? right?

our planet in 2/3 rds covered in ocean, we've mapped about 1% of oceans floor. I think we should explore our own planet before we throw billions ( more) dollars into manned space exploration.

I don't think that interplanetary travel will happen in our life time maybe in our grand children's lifetime. I am really doubtful though.

So underwater mining and exploration should be a more direct goal? That makes sense from a cost perspective, but what about the fact that we may loose the earth one day, and that day may be soon.

i think knowing whether or not we're alone in the universe is a little more important to the average human psyche than knowing what the sand looks like at the bottom of the ocean floor or finding Nemo. i agree that there's a lot to be learned, but to suggest NOT exploring the rest of space is simply naive.

We went from flying a hundred feet over sand dunes(wright brothers) to flying to the moon in about 6 or 7 decades. I think there will be a manned mission to mars in my lifetimes(I'm 17). I think mars will be terraformed by man within the next few centuries.

This can all happen provided that we spend our best minds and resources on nice things instead of war.

Well unless we can actually find something we could use out there, whether it be another planet capable of supporting life or natural resources why do it? That or keep researching solar panels, I think that's what they do up there, cause ours suck right now. We could save our planet and have awesome solar powered stuff.

Solar powered ski lifts? Obviously fitted with some power storage system so when it's not sunny they still run.

We still have a LOT to learn about our own planet. The only space travel I support at this point is research based in which we are learning about our own planet in the process.

The only benefit I see to space travel is the technological gains. Those are typical not a direct result of the space travel, but moreso the massive budgets and funding that space travel receives.

I dont see it happening in our life time. Not because the technology wont be available, but due to financial reasons. The world is too fucked up to get a solid space program going right now. I think in order to make major advances in space travel, it would have to be a global effort.

i hope theres a mar mission within my lifetime at least. if not mars, then let's at least get back to the moon as planned.

and it will never work without war. Space travel was born from war. Hell, if world war II had gone on another decade or so, i have absolutely no doubt that the first man in space would have been a nazi. Probably the same with the moon, would have been nazis.

things change quickly man, we just need something to get everyone going.

somethign interesting about mars... they have a huge volcano that is may bigger then any mountain on earth. so..... if somehow we could get some snowmakers and get that thing covered with snow it would be an endless ski run. you could start at the top and there wouldnt be a bottom for days. lets get on this shit!!

The space race of the 1960s was responsible for some of our greatest and everyday technological advances that we know today.  But it was also responsible for some of the most deadliest developments in military advancement.  Yet, perhaps the best outcome of the great space race was the level of human creativity that it fostered.

I'm disappointed that in the past 40 years we have not been able to advance our space programs much farther than all those decades ago.  I think there is much to learn about ourselves and our own planet by exploring space.  Nevertheless, I think we need to invest much more time and money into understanding our own planet and saving or restoring our diminishing wildlife and ecosystems.

I do not doubt that we can achieve (or if it has already been secretly achieved) the ability to have minimal space travel.  But to the extent of commercial space travel, well, I think at the moment, our militarily minded  planet will find it too much of a security risk.

this is a really cool documentary that doesnt necessarily pertain to space travel itself but is very interesting. its about the U.S. and russia back in the day spying on each other IN SPACE. it talks about shit like how we put a satellite in orbit that is basically identical to the hubble telescope except it was put up there in the 60's and its pointed at earth instead of space and can see a 3inch object on the ground... anyways here it is.
