Skiing Mag's Gear Guide

just got the new issue and i'm really dissapointed in it.  They didn't review nearly as many skis and other products as last year.  i think the mag is about half the size as last year too.  I usually look forward to skiing's reviews because they always used to cover skis in a little more depth than just the stoked meter from freeskier.

I totally agree with what you are saying. It definitely was a pretty thin guide, however the things that they did review they did with the same attention to detail that they normally have. I think it has to do with the fact that they (and the rest of the industry) have had to make some serious cut backs, just read the article towards the beginning titled "How Screwed are We?". It goes into detail about the various changes that are taking place in the industry from an economic standpoint.

yea i can understand the cutbacks, i was just hoping for better.  i hope freeskier goes back to the formula from the 08 review guide and not last year's where they only seriously reviewed about 8 skis in each category and just showed pictures of everything else.  i can look up specs online but i like to hear some simple pros and cons

I wasn't disappointed so much as surprised. It seemed like it didn't review any of the skis I was hoping to buy for next year. haha

haha thanks, but yea the point of this thread was more how surprised i was that it was much smaller than last year's, blame it on the economy if you want

i realized when i got this issue of skiing that it is a suck dick magazine. they are extremely behind the time. "NEW SKI TECHNOLOGY THAT WILL CHANGE THE WAY YOU SKI!" i was really excited so i flipped to pg. 52 to see an article about rockered skis
wow thats new. then they go into the pros and cons of twin tips. come on what is this..ski magazine?

Hence why NS Gear Guide should be one of the better if not the best review guide of the year. From your statement of how companies the magizine are reviews are getting paid from basically sums up every single publication. From what i understand i'm pretty sure NS is not getting paid as much or if any from these compnaies. Thus, a deeper and more in depth review of skis, boots, bindings and hardgoods

But like you said as well every 'Review' and 'Gear' Guide is flawed from every skier's perspective. The perfect ski is depend on the factors of your Weight, Height, Age, Ability, and Location  Location Location. Such factors cannot be simply achived with the varible amount of time the reviewers are given and such a broad range of testers cannot be achieved as well. Thus the best way to find Your 'Perfect' ski is through demoing and going to more major demos throughout the season.

Rocker actually is only has been mass produced in a ski for about five years. A little longer if you consider the Spat. I'd say it is a relatively new technology

i kind of liked how they broke down rocker, early rise and normal camber. i haven't seen anyone lay down the basics all in one place so i thought it was good maybe just misleading on the cover

i dont know if you guys noticed this or not but not only was the mag smaller but they completely dropped the category of park specific twins. seriously i couldnt believe this i was like wtf that shows a lot of support for the twin tippers out there but yet they put in an article about the jibyard. idk whats up over there but i think im gonna shoot em an email maybe they have a pair of those pbr skis left over lol.

I felt the same about the new Powder mag. The huge section on Shane was great but the gear guide was tiny and worthless, like someone said about Skiing Mag, Powder also seemed far thinner than last year. I remember getting the gear guides years ago and they were the thickest mags of the year. I was just pumped to get the new mags and so far have been disappointed .

Powder has a decent buyers guide on their website. The "Powder Week" loops, but the reviews are fine.

Yeah, I hope the October magazines are better than this.

The October mags will probably be smaller. Seems like gear guides are usually the biggest - from what I can see.

Uh... no.

October's usually Resort Guide month. Usually they're about the same size as the gear guide. I've always found the gear guides to be misleading -- because they're large magazines, full of reviews, but it's nothing more than reviews there aren't any featured stories, there's less news, less of other things and more of the gear guide. This year it seemed like less gear guide and less of everything.

I still think this issue of Powder takes the prize for best issue ever, though. No other magazine had such a comprehensive, great look at McConkey's life.

You're talking about skiing magazine (the magazine for people new to skiing) although I thought last years covers were pretty sick.  Stick to Freeskier(if you use newschoolers.com) and Powder (if you use tetongravity.com)

Ski magazine is for people that mostly ski groomers and want to know about real estate. The Volkl Gotama, (106 underfoot) was in their Powder Super Wide Category.
