Short story thing: Driving down the highway at about 80 mph, roof rack thing opens cause it wasn't locked or something, one of my cousins skis goes flying. He's young, so he has mini public enemys, very very light. Stopped the car, my uncle went and got the ski, he ran across the highway, brought it back, perfectly fine. Besides some dirt on the base. Same thing happened one time, but it was a duffle bag from camping and it tore into shreds.

Was that just luck or are public enemys really tough. Plus, it was mini junior ones.. I'm thinking luck.

why would it break? the ski is only falling from a height of 6 ft with no weight on it? the speed of the car doesn't add much impact to the ground. moral of the story: people put a lot more stress on the ski landing a 3 ft jump then when the ski falls off the car, even going 80 :) by the way, the same thing happened to my friends ski (tweaks) and they were unharmed.

Gravity is pulling the ski down at the same rate at 0 MPH than it is at 80 MPH. The only thing that would happen would be due to impact from going 80 mph - 0, which could have beat the hell out of the binding. Luckily that didn't happen though and the skis are fine.

I could very well be wrong, but wouldnt it be comprable to throwing the skis 8o mph? And let me re-cap, I did very poorly in physics, but you would think that they would have been a little messed up. Everytime I usually hear of people's skis falling off of their racks they usually get messed up, but then again most of the time their shit is also getting ran over by like 3 Mack Semi-Trucks.








I have a theory that all retards have one long tendon that goes from wrist to wrist, so therefore that is why they always are screwin around with one wrist up, and the other one down.

^lol west dont be a smart ass. me = physics teacher in a year or so. geez. and yes, the ski would be scratched up etc, but evidently you weren't listening to the point. Switchpollard stated it fairly well. The ski still only hits the ground with about maybe 10 mph of vertical velocity, which is the force that matters. If you really want to get into physics I will post some worked out equations for you to show you that the force of the ski hitting the ground coming off the car is far less than the force of someone landing after getting 10 ft off the ground on a 25 foot kicker. Once again, I have no doubt it would scratch the skis up, but the damage would only be aesthetic

I didn't mean to make a cut at your intelegence, it's just a little diff. then you stated. If the surface it hit was completely flat and smooth, yes very little damage would be done. Tarmac is extremely rough and un-uniform. Although the downward motion is only about 10mph, if the ski hits the ground on edge, and starts to spin the forces are very different. If that ski's tip hits the pavement with a forward force of 40-80 mph, it would cause extreme stress, flexing the ski, it would be very easy for it to snap.

this is true, but the likelihood of it 'catching' a rough patch which attempted to completely stop the skis forward motion, is pretty darn low :)

^so by your same reasoning, if i jump out of a car going 80 mph it's only gonna hurt as bad as if i fell two feet out the door??

and on the same note, my friends (2 sb's, 1 skier) had all their gear fly off the rack going about 80......then a semi ran over the whole thing.....needless to say i am out one pair of skis because i let the skier borrow my other pair

^^ if you are reasoning like a 12 year old, then yes they are same :) no, strode... clearly you would be hurt by falling off a roof, but that is because you are much more fragile. Your comparison like saying the same things would have if you dropped a marble and a watermelon.

I lost 4 pairs of skis when my thule rack opened up. I had just gotten mine that week and they had yet to see the snow. they all got run over by a semi truck. I almost cried. I had no money since i just got those skis so i had to get some shittier skis for the rest of the year. On the plus side, after about 6 months of bitching, thule wrote me a check for the cost of the skis and bindings. they also gave me a new rack and locking cylinders.

physics teacher or not, your statement lacks common sense. whether the actual impact is any greater on not, they are still going to be sliding to a stop from 80 mph on rough pavement. those skis should have some narly road rash and maybe even delamination if they slide on an edge.

so i guess enemies are tough.

i'm not tryin to dis any of you people, however i believe you are missing one important concept. If the ski falls off the rack, who says in has to land flat, if you are goin 80 and it catches tip first, i'm pretty sure it'd be pretty messed up, and seeing that a ski tip is curved, when it unlocked the ski would most likely tumble end over end allowing for a high possibility of landing on tip or tail
