Getting music rights

so i am doing a ski movie for my senior project and have no idea on how to go about getting rights for my songs, any info on this subject would be extremely helpful. +K

senior as in high school or...? when i studied video in college(aka cegep in quebec), we used any music we wanted and didn't have to get rights for it. if you're going to make money off it, i think it's a completely different story. you'll have to contact appropriate people, i don't know whom unfortunately, but then i believe from then on it might be a process that would/could take a few weeks to a few months...so if it isn't anything major, don't worry i guess...but otherwise, when in doubt google a few sites:


i'm curious too if anyone's done this from experience.

Basically, if you're not going to be making money off it, don't worry about it, it's no big deal.  You'll obviously want to give the artists credit, though.

If it is a big deal, for whatever reason, my only suggestion would be to find some sort of contact information, contact them, and basically spell out your situation.  Depending on how "big" the artist is, you may go through a publicist, but either way the most important thing is that you're not making money from it.  If you tell them that they'll be like "Okay whatever."

lots of artists are pretty chill about that stuff if you just email them. look for artists working under creative commons licenses and they normally will let you use there songs free or for a very reasonable fee depending on what your doing.

if you want mainstream music expect to pay big bucks, but if your in hs it shouldnt be a problem.  We went legit for our movie this year and got all the rights, ended up costing about 300 fot all of them (one is still pending because a podunk band wants 1000 for a song we are only using a bit of).  but we are planning on selling dvds and the whole deal so we had to.  99% of artists dont care if your not making money with it
