Aghhh, new camera time

due to some the unfortunate event of my camera being stolen last spring, i am back on the market for a new camera. previously i had a FX1 and loved it. but that camera is slightly outdated and while i might go back to that (or possible upgrade to the Z1U). so while i am familiar with the HDV format, i am definitely interested in looking into solid state. so i'd like to hear what people's opinions are on SD vs P2 (panis) and other 3chip HD cameras. and EX1s are out of my price-range.

hmc150 for AVCHD which with the new final cut studio 3 is legit as fuck.


for p2 you have two choices:
buy an old/used hvx, prob get one for about 4000.

buy an hpx new/used, 4000-5000


just stick to pani when it comes to solid state, ditch hdv.

Also, to keep it in a slightly more affordable realm, Panisonic just announced the new HMC40.  Check that out.

yeah for sure. baby of the hmc 150 and films solid state! just make sure you have fcs3

Personally i like hdv, i know many people dont but to me having a hd crash and loosing all your footage just doesnt sound fun, now either does importing but id rather import then have nothing at all.  Put that ontop of needing the new fcp if your going to be using an hmc150 and your costs are adding up.  I personally was debating between the fx, the hmc150 or the xh a1 a few months ago.  The xh won out and im very happy with the footage i have got with it.

if you want the ease of tapless but want the tapes as a backup i guess sony just came out with an addaptor for the z7u that can be used with the xh as well that integrates through the firewire port.  It allows for a tape backup to be run when recording primarily to cf cards, kinda cool but im guessing that puts your right up into the price as an hmc with the new fcp studio so probably not worth it just thought id offer my two cents

The failing hard drive argument isn't really a reason not to shoot solid state.  Hard drives are super cheap and you can have a very good backup system for not that much money.  Using hard drives is just as safe as tape, you just have to be smart and make sure you back your footage up.

this is a valid point however it is pretty easy to back shit up these days and external drives are pretty cheap... pretty much comes down to tapes or not and what do you edit with

haha, yeah, they're well out of my means, but there are a few people who arent really restricted by the budget of funding one's self...

the idea of a big box of tapes as redundancy vs a $100 hard drive is... laughable for most people.

definitely looking into used in those cameras, also, am interested in seeing the HMC40 with the lower price and all, but definitely am going to wait to see footage and hear more reviews as to how the color reproduction and low light performance are with the MOS vs. CCDs.

also, what are the main upgrades of FCS3 vs. 2?
