rail plan with no welding

i dont know if its possible...unless...well..i think you can think of something..i thought of a way.but i dont want to explain it..good luck...why not just do a handrail though?

i have some rails with no welding made with metal and wood but u neet the right kind of metal and i dont think u can pick it up from home depo. i bought it from a construction site i worked at this summer after they were done building i bought 10 pieces each 10ft for $50. ive made 4 rails so far that can all connect and im trying to work out how to make them with kinks and stuff, u can check it out in some of the vids in minty's profile.

weld those bad boys. ask around, mabye your parents or friends can get their hands on a mig welder.

just get some scrap steel and just start teaching yourself(or find someone who knows how). then just weld your rails and grind them down smooth.

trust me, you'll feel better knowing that you did it the right way. and you'll have fun learning how.

LISTEN UP.....real simple design, AS LONG AS ten foot sections are ok for you. ours is a flat down flat double barrel 30 ft total, here is everything we built it with:

TOOLS
(1) 8 lb sledge
(1) coping saw
(1) power drill
(1) 13/32'' metal drill bit
(1) handheld power saw (optional)
(1) level (optional)

MATERIALS
(6) 2'' diameter 10' metal conduit casing pipes (2 for each section) - these are about $9 per 10' length at home depot and are about 1/16'' thick - don't get the galvanized steel it's like 3 times more $ and three times thicker
(2 or more) 10' sections of same pipe for vertical supports
(1) 10' length of 3/8'' threaded rod
(24) 3/8'' washers
(12) 3/8'' nuts

step 1: with coping saw (or handheld power saw) cut support pipes into halves/three pieces, depending on how high you want your rail to be....it helps to cut one end flat, and the other at an angle since you will be driving it into the ground.

step 2: drive support approx. 1' into the ground with 8 lb sledge. (the bigger the people sliding the rail, the deeper you want to go) hint: do one support at a time as opposed to all of them at the same time, since they won't want to go in straight anyway, and you can line them up if you go one by one

step 3: since the sledge fucking destroys the top of the pipe, you have to cut it level with the coping saw

step 4: using power drill, put one whole ten foot section of pipe on both sides of the support, drill one hole through all three, making sure you go as close to the top of the support as possible since the top of the support is barely below the surface of the two bars you will be sliding

step 5: entire assembly is about 6'' wide, so cut the piece of 3/8'' threaded rod to about 8'' or 9'' sections (enough to go through all three bars plus room for washers and nuts). put rod through all the way through the hole, with washers at each end and where the bars come in contact with each other, and thread 3/8'' nuts around both ends. tighten like a motherfucker.

step 6: repeat steps 1-5 for each support so you can line it up with your eyes, ours has four total

NOTE: this design does not allow for long, seamless rails, instead there is a 2'' dropdown at each section, but it's really nothing, and the rail rides really smooth, especially since you can buy all the materials at home depot, and the tools at a pawn shop (if you/your parents don't already own them) all for about $100

just a thought, but has anyone tried to use pvc or other material, wrapped in sheet metal? I figure you could stagger the seams (overlap em a little) so there should be minimal catching, and it shouldn't be too expensive. I haven't tried it, but it seems like it should work.

just get a long piece of lumber that is just a little longer than the rail itself. then on the ends hammer a few nails onto the wood, and bend them into the hole on the end of the pipe. do it on both ends and it shouldnt move. as for legs then just nail in a few of em and ull be good to go. then pop that ghetto bitch in the snow pack it tight so it wont move around. then rip it.

Manus idk but my stupid friend tried putting aluminum foil on our pvc rail when it chipped. Yea that definetly does not work.

also you can get lumber and a pipe and make the base outta 2x4's andthen just use like.. construction glue (polyeurothane, like liquid nails) to put the metal on top.. it should hold, mine has so far

you don't need any freeken expensive mig welder to weld a rail. (I am welding my first rail ever currently and I am useing a torch welder (also a mig welder becuase it is faster, but you don't need one!)

get a grinder so you can amke the edges and welds nice and smooth (about $30) and a torch welder (mabey $100 for a good one) and learn how to use it (it is really really easy, I got it within 5 min my first day useing one)

To solve strodes step 3: use a piece of plywood or something between the pipe and sledge, that way the pipe wont get owned.

This idea is similar, but a little easier:

Materials:
2x8 cheap wood (10') ----- ~$8.00
2x4 cheap wood (varies) -- ~$5.00
2x2 cheap wood (2 x 10') - ~$5.00
2' round pipe (2 x 10') -- ~$20.00
screws ------------------- ~$2.00
construction glue (optional)

Tools:
drill w/ metal bits, and bit for your screws
saw
planer/sander/something to shave down wood (optional)

1. Make A-frames from the 2x4 (make 3)

2. Screw the 2x8 down to the A-frames.

3. Screw the 2x2's on the edges of the 2x8, so there is a 4' gap (Measure this, dont assume. Most '2x2' or '2xanything' is actually about 1 3/4') in the middle of the 2x8. This is where the rails will go.

4. Put the rails into the 4' gap. Since the '2x2' is actually around 1 3/4', the rails should be higher than the wood. If it isnt enough for you, use a planer to take it down a bit.

5. Drill through the 2x2 into the pipe, laterally, on both sides and at several places along the rail (more = sturdier rails).

6. Screws where your drilled places are.

7. At the ends of the pipe, drill between the pipes and put a screw in to hold them together. Put down construction glue between the pipes if desired.

8. Rip it.

to solve step 3, we tried with a 2 INCH THICK piece of solid lumber, thinking exactly what you are thinking. the fucker broke clean in half in one shot. it only takes like a minute to saw the busted end off, plus you need it at an exact height anyway if you want you rail to be level. and where i live we have to pound them into the ground because the 5 or 6 snowfalls we get only stick for a few days (not all of colorado is constantly covered with snow)

sean, there is a big difference between 16-gauge sheet metal and tin foil. Its very unlikely you'll damage sheet metal, but anything is possible. It was just a thought, and Strodes idea is better, but I thought I'd through out another idea as well.

Timmy how and where do you screw the 2 x 8 to A-Frames?

Straight down through the 2x8 into the A-frames. you want the A-frames to connect to the 2x8 at the edges of the 2x8 for the most stability, and the 2x4 should go so that its 4' length is along the 2x8, not across it.

i have 2 PVC rails that i made and htey work just as good as metal. no cracks and only cost 15 each. what you need is 2x4s, 4 1/2 inch PVC pipes, and like 3 inch wood screws. then make it.

I recently made a PVC rail, but last year the PVC rail at my mountain splintered and almost impailed sumone. The only real problem with PVC is that its so much slicker than metal and after stomping everything on PVC at my house I grind some metal and it feels stickier than hell. Plus you have to be able to do metal because you cant do kinks and rainbows with PVC

i used bed rails on a 2x4 frame and i typed up somthing that took me 1 hour befor but when i posted it it fucked up so now its not going to be long at all

you can get bed rails at yard sales or bed shops but i got a new bed so i used the onse from my old one then i screwed them on to a 2 x 4 frame in the side of the L you dont slide on i made a kink but there are many diffrent thing you can make with them.
