Is Weed Decriminalized in Canada?

Me and a couple of buddys felt like blazing at lunch at my work so we went behind Wal Mart and started smoking a blunt, mid sesh a cop pulls up and says, " is there weed in there?" , were not going to dig ourselves a grave cause we already think were in shit so we tell him that there is.
We talked for a little while after but anyways to my surprise he let us go... theres rumours that its been decriminalized and on Wikipedia it says it is.

My buddy told me aswell that the most a cop can do here in Canada is take it away, im thinking that this is actually true, but obviously with small amounts, i doubt youll get the cold shoulder from a cop with half a pound of grass on you.

Does anyone know anything about it being decrimanalized? Or are the cops in Ontario just really chill and leinient.

im pretty sure the only place weed has been decriminalized (and even there not totally) is amsterdam........  which is a city in holland (not even the whole country)....  so, uh, yeah dude.

double check what?  amsterdam its legal to own, sell (if you have a coffeeshop as they call it), and smoke in your house or said shop but not out on the street.

it's definately not decriminalized or it would have been on the news.
it would have been relly shitty of the cop to bust you for one jay.  there's really no harm n that small amount of weed. tha's why he let you go.

well if it is illegal people rarely get charged for smoking in canada..

here in the US Cali might have a vote on legalizing it(and all good people over 18 will show up hopefully that is enough, since a ton of the people who like it won't have a vote).  And if Cali does it the rest of the US follows.

yeah it's decriminalized here in MN too, all that happens if you get busted with a small amount is your bud gets taken and you get a small fine.

Ummm...i have little knowledge on the whole weed movement, but i do know everyone is the thread is a little retarted. 1) From what I have heard, weed is not legal in any way in Amsterdam, just super chill and down to earth cops who dont make a big deal of it

2) Decriminalized does not mean legal. It means you can not be thrown in jail for it. You will still have it confiscated, and most likely receive a fine

3) Amsterdam is not the only place weed is decriminalized. It has also been decriminalized  in MA. Where an adult caught possesing less then an ounce recives like a $200 fine without possibility of jail time. A minor will have his parents notified and receive a direct citation.

4) You were reading wikepedia..

5) Even if it was some how decriminalized  in Canada, and it wasnt broadcasted throughout the country, in a way you did not hear about it, in most scenarios the cop would confiscate all of your marijuana, tell your parents (if your a minor), take down all your information, and you would be fined.

6) I understand you were asking a simple question, but it was a stupid question so you received a few sarcastic answers, dont start freaking the fuck out and ripping on anyone who gave you said sarcastic answer.

Yay knowledge!

In fact, cannabis is decriminalized in 13 states in the US. Most states you can have anything up to an ounce and not be jailed. Anything over and they'll likely try to charge you with trafficking. Recently decriminalization has come to almost mean legalization. In some states like MA police are getting to the point where they don't even issue citations. They do this because there is no ramification for not paying the ticket. And if they try to take you to court, it costs the police station more money to send an officer to court than they make on the ticket.

Also, Ontario is kinda weird with their cannabis laws. A while back a judge ruled that cannabis laws were unconstitutional. So things aren't really sorted out there. People need to realize the difference in Federal and state/provincial law. Just because it's illegal to do something in the country, doesn't mean it's illegal to do it in a certain state/province.

no. its decriminalized in amsterdam. youre still not supposed to have it there, but if youre just walking around with a blunt they wont care, but youll probably get in trouble if you have like a wheelbarrow full of it

its decriminalized in Alaska, Colorado, California, Oregon, Minnesota, Nebraska, Maine, Mississippi, Ohio, North Carolina, New York, Massachusetts, and Nevada, and that's just in the states alone. so, uh, no dude, your wrong stop being a dick when you don't know your shit

Its not decriminalize but I know a lot of people who've been arrested like 10+ times for weed and the worst the cops did is take the 7 and put it in the sewers. Now if you hang out with 1 ounce on you it's another story, they won't waste their time putting every teenager who smokes a spliff in jail.

if you are caught with under the amount needed for a traffiking charge they have the authority to confiscate it and fine you, but you dont get a criminal record. you've broken the law, but youre not a criminal. its like a parking ticket or a drunk in public charge.

decrimanlized in ohio, my friend got pulled over and searched, and they took his 1/8th, and gave a $50 citizens ticket, doesnt even show on your records, atleast i believe

It does. Well at least that's what an Indiana cop told me. Since I'm like 10 minutes from Ohio he deals with a lot of people out of state.

Apparently, it goes on your record that you were cited for a non-criminal offense. But they word it so that only people cited for cannabis possession have that particular type of offense. It doesn't say anything about you having marijuana but I guess the cops are hip to the lingo.

Again, only anecdotal evidence, not necessarily true.

Here in MA its decriminalized meaning its a civil offense like a speeding ticket and if you are caught with under an ounce you get a citation and $100 fine, and if your under 18 you either go to a drug course or pay a $1000 fine.
im pretty sure getting caught with paraphernalia is a much bigger consequence though

a kid was triping on dxm and my friend was covering for him and saying that he chewed on the salvia divanorium leaves and he will be fine in an hour, the cop believed him and said "well if he isn't doing anything illegal you won't have anything illegal on you" then he persuaded him with all the bullshit to search his car, he found a dub he just picked up, he was gonna go smoke a blunt i believe. since it was under an ounce he just got the misdemeanor.

He was very unlucky, he was just driving by and saw some asshole left our other friend behind the grocery store at the height of his DXM trip, he did the right thing and helped him, then the cop came. Asshole cop, but good thing he didn't find him alone tripping though.

Keep in mind that salvia is only illegal in sufix county NY so the other guy got away clean, no charges of public intoxication luckily.

to stay on the subject, weed is only decriminalized in amsterdam in holand, lots of third world countries don't have any laws about it, go into the streets of new dehli and you can buy bhang and drink it right on the street

hrm, i'm not sure on the situation, but i remember a few years ago quebec made it less of an offense to carry less than 3 grams on you or something...but anyone you might meet from quebec would tell you the cops dont care and they probably take it from you to smoke it...

Obviously I'll never know your buddy's situation but one thing I do know is the law. If your friend would have been smart about the situation he could have avoided his misdemeanor.

No but it really depends on the cop, I know a kid who was caught with .5 and he was about to spark it and the cops put him in the back and brought him home to his parents, where as other police offers give you the "not in public parks, in view of others and be respectful" but thats with like .5.. Im pretty sure about 3gs you start getting into shit

If it is decriminalized anywhere it is a mistake, This scenario makes no sense, Dealers don't benefit because growing isn't legal and in some scenarios can't sell legally, cops they can't bust civilians they don't benefit, but the user is safe. It is sending mixed messages and we would all just benefit from legalazation, the dealars won't be making a lot though, i would feel bad for the nice dealers who aren't in gangs or criminals.

I feel if we start decriminalizing it will take a lot long to legalize because the government doesn't want hemp become the #1 crop again.
