Downsides of shooting video with a DSLR?

So I am in the market for a video camera to put together some edits this season. A couple of my friends are entering quite a few big mountain competitions this season, so that will be a lot of what I'm filming. So not so much park and followcams, more filming from a little bit further away, and with a tripod.

I have baisically narrowed my decision down to something that looks a lot like an HV30 (or similar panasonic equivalent) with a wide angle full zoom lense and the Canon T1i, I would wait to buy different lenses for this until I had a chance to use it a few times.

I know these are very different cameras, so to keep it as simple as possible, I would really like to know what the downsides are to shotting video with the T1i?

I've done lots of research and seen lots of edits from it different places on the internet, so I know that it only shoots 1080 in 20fps and cant record continuously because the sensor gets overheated. I'm just wondering if there are any other downsides or issues with shooting video on a DSLR that I may have missed.

The main downside is rather obvious; It's a still camera with a video mode, not a video camera.  If you want to shoot stills with some occasional video, then the DSLR would be the camera for you, but if you want to focus on video, then the HV30 is the cam for you.  I love my HV20 for shooting skiing.  It's relatively compact, but takes amazing quality.  While many may disagree, I prefer it to my XHA1 when it comes to shooting park.

hes probably refering to the 32gb flash drive camera thats like the same size, but its 3chip.

Yeah I would be looking at the HS250 from Panasonic. I guess its a little bit more expensive, but still a pretty similar camera marketwise.

Can anyone elaborate on why they are saying go HV30? I had a feeling that would be the response I would get, I'm just a camera noob so I was just wondering what everyones reasoning is? As far as I can see the real advantage of DSLR HD is that it gives you a much broader range of lens options, and DOF. Is some of the reasoning from people because of these things? That its just a lot more complication if you are a beginner?

If anyone out there has used both the Panasonic HS250 and the HV30 and could chime in on the real world ups and downs of both (beyond just specs) that would also help me out a lot.

simply a matter of size and weight. I'm not super into filming skiing, so the Hv20 does the job perfectly for the amount of effort i'm willing to put fourth.

I have a nikon D5000 and shot some video with it before.  Very soft and has a jello effect when panning a lot.  Granted here is a video shot at night with only a flood light.

it is very comparable to the t1i or whatever the canon is if not better.

Some cameras like the 5DMKII have great videos, but it will be a while before DSLRs have overall better value than camcorders. HV30

Anyone else? Its starting to come down to HV30 vs HS250 now. But I'm still curious about why people dont think DSLR would be a good choice.

Jello, it's still a DSLR, not a video camera, workflow can be a pain depending on the camera.  Follow cams will be tricky because of the jello effect, you'd need a Steadicam.  Those reasons right there should be enough.

I would do the hs250 just cause its flash and id rather deal with flash than tapes.

I think the biggest advantage of tape is that you will always have that sense of security knowing that you have the footage in a physical form.  Tapeless work flow is really great, but it's not right for everyone and can scare the shit out of you sometimes.

ill sell you my panasonic sd100 recorded at most 2 hours with it id say allmost better than new condition, i just dont have the patience to deal with AVCHD anymore

My film company shoots about 80% of the time with the Canon EOS D5. For the price, DSLR lenses are better, the latitude is vastly superior, and you'll get much richer image quality with practical lighting. 20fps is hard to deal with though; I'd recommend getting a plugin like Twixtor if you're planning on shooting a lot of realtime video at 20fps that will have to be converted to 24 or 30fps.

i used to have an hv30 which was great but i have since sold it and got a t1i and while it is not as easy to use as a typical camcorder, if you know what your doing you can get some great results. So for someone like me who does both video and photos it was a no brainer. also it does shot 30fps at 720p

I figured I would just shoot in the 720 30fps. Also my brother owns a sony HD cam with a baby death lense, so if I ever needed something for followcams/park shoooting I could use that.

Regaurdless I think a dedicated camcorder might be a better idea for me. The only reasons I was thinking a DSLR might be a good idea were DOF and because I will be shooting some skiing from a bit of a distance. So the ability to have eaisily interchangable lenses is appealing. that and the fact thatI would really like to start taking stills too, but at the moment video is my priority.

agreed, having tapes as a backup has saved me a few times.  I am interested in getting the new sony setup that i can use both tape and cf cards for my xh.  Just so i can have the best of both worlds.  (sorry to change the subject of the thread but has anyone had any experience with the unit im talking about that was origanally used for the z7u but can work on the xh and many other cameras?)
