yeah.. california doesnt use road salt. all sand here.

i bought my Impreza from a family friend who is from Maine.. it drives perfect, except 2 issues that are rust related- it needs a new left front axle, because the CV joint is out, and the gas tank has a leak because the front of the seam has rusted kinda bad. The axle is a cheap (axle cost me 35 NEW), and USUALLY easy fix (I replaced an axle on my last suby - and it was a total cinch, took me 2 hours).

The gas tank is a bit of a bitch due to its location, but all i really gotta do is wire brush all the rust off and goop a bunch of tank sealant on it and it will be gold.

I took apart the whole thing.. got down all the way to the part where you slide the axle out of the hub and the things frozen on there so hard...

so fuckin A now i need to replace the hub, probably..

Yeah, my Dad grew up on the East and he said his cars got real rusty.  Plus it's bad on the East because when it snows, no matter where you are there is snow, so you are driving on salted roads almost the whole time.  Here in CA though everything is sand for environmental reasons and if we were to use salt the effect would be nothing similar to this because it only snows above 4,000ft. most of the time here.  Since you and I are in the valley half or more of our drives are just on wet roads.  That sucks though.  Have fun fixing it up.

no, thats just one of the issues.. the entire bottom of the car is rusted like the titanic...

yea, haha, i was just kidding.  i have a pickup truck thats rusted all over on the bottom.  it snows, then melts here so much and they are constantly salting because with all the snowing and melting the roads are basically just sheets of ice.

Why don't they just use sand on the East?  Doesn't salt help keep stuff frozen?

salt only keaps stuff frozen in warmer temperatures in the 30's by melting the snow and then it refreezing, but in colder weather it just gets rid of it. Some places use sand, idk why most dont

Ahhh, that makes way more sense.  They only allow sand here in CA and I'm surprised they don't do sand only on the East, keeps the car in better shape.  car gets dirty as fuck when the road is wet though, they dump TONS of sand on our highway.

why not just replace the cv joint and people need to just wash there cars more during the winter then no rust probs my car has 120000 and rust is not a issue its a 95 btw hondas are solid.

by the way, i have a 94 accord.. and the body is mostly rust now..

such weak metal for the rear quarters.

youre thinking it keeps stuff frozen because they salt jumps.  when they salt a jump it just melts the top layer, so then the water from the melt refreezes before it runs away, which makes the jump hard

with the roads they just keep dumping so much salt on that it cant refreeze.  they salt untill there is nothing on the road.  and then it makes this white powder that gets on cars, your shoes, its pretty bad.  they probably dont use sand just because it wouldnt work well enough, theres to much solid ice that you would need to have to road like pure sand

Yeah, I've never been on the East during the Winter and it's probably nothing like the West.  usually, we get a storm and then the day after it gets warm and the snow melts right off the road so then we don't have to worry about solid ice.  We usually end up with a really firm pack of snow on the road that is VERY close to pure ice, but then we have the snow on top for extra grip, the sand does it's job though.

You have to replace the whole axle to replace the CV joint, homie.

and its got just under 200k on it.. so yeah rust..
