Replying to Barrecrafter ski rack question

so i found my dads old ski rack in my uncles basement. its from his college days, over 30 years ago.  its incredibly similar to this: http://www.prolineracks.com/sportrack-sierra-ski-rack.html the problem is, even if you put the skis on as shown in the picture, the brakes hit the roof of the car. does anybody know how to avoid this besides getting fat rubber bands for the brakes? also does anyone know if the problem is fixed on the newer model in the link?
