Roger's Pass

I am planning to head up there this winter w/a few friends.  I was wondering if anyone has any info that would help out.  I'm not looking for your local stashes, just some advice on the area.  I guess there's a best western near the pass, and we plan on making reservations in advance to stay there.  Other than that I've heard that your avy antenae has to be on full alert because of the large avy paths and the fact that they start way above you.  Anyway, like I said, any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks.

Ya, the hotel is right at the trail head. Its really easy. There is an information center beside the hotel. You can check in with the information center before you go into the pass, they have the avy bulletins posted and they keep a log of who goes up and who comes back ...  They also have maps, and a 3d model of part of the range.

The area is huge and there is loads of massive terrain. The skin up is easy and there is usually a body or two in the area on any given day. Aside from all the usual "avalanche safety advise" people love giving over the inter web all I will say is ,  loads of massive terrain, have fun.

where are you coming in from and when do you plan on going?

Thanks for your info.  We're coming from Park City, UT and most likely around the end of Feb/beginning of March.

Holy shit that is an epic area.  I have never been up Illecillewaet during the winter, but damn does it look amazing.  You could also look into renting out a back country lodge, somthing like the Wheeler hut, or the Asulkan hut.  The Asulkan hike in is a long way though, and it goes through some dangerous terrain.  But once your up there the line are damn near limitless. 

Like nomensteven said, go to the discovery center, pick up a topo map (have one right in front of me) and pick up the ski touring in Rogers Pass book.  I got one of those and it give detailed routes to great lines, and how to avoid getting loss.

So stoked to ski Rogers Pass. Just picked up 184 Nordica Zeros w/freerides and skins just for skiing the pass this winter. Those pillows look tasty.

wow thanks for all of the info guys.  Good call w/the info center.  I'll definitely hit them up and pick up a topo.  I'll prob be reading the daily avy advisory a few weeks before hand to get a good understanding of the snow pack, too. 

Nomensteven, could you give me coordinates of those pillows?  It's funny being American, when I see 900m I originally thought 900ft.  But no, that's a lot higher than 900'.  It looks like a hell of a skin but worth it.  I plan on skiing that area if I can locate it and if the snow is safe, looks pretty epic.

Yea if you use google earth and you can locate it, you'll notice the lat and long in the bottom center of the frame.

illecillewaet, awsome. I have only gone in there in the summer, that shot looks promising. I am going to have to convince a few sled necks to skin up for the day.

glacier crest is the shit. 3 plus hours up. an easy pillow line is loop brook. not as amazing but its 30 min up.

I have never been to the pass but am planning a trip around Rememberance day, it looks like it's been continually dumping at the pass, so I think they'll have enough snow. I have heard of an area called balu trees or something? Not sure where that is, but if it's snowing then like it is now I might have to hit up the trees, is there anywhere good to do quick (fairly ) laps of them, and will the alders maybe be too big in November.

And how much a night is that best western, don't want to repeat the harrowing drive every day.

And what about those huts, do you have to book them like a year in advance.

Check the TGR thread for interior conditions, some one was up there the other day and this is what he said.

Up to the Balu Pass area for some LAB turns with Downhill Rider. Not recommended, needs more snow.

HS 30-50, mainly soft windslab on anything exposed. Saw debris from one wind pocket in the STS runout. Also saw bear tracks near the Frequent Flyer slide path.

snow line has moved to over 2200m. since this report. IMO the pass may not be the best option. But, if you really like ski touring, at the least It would be a nice ski up in the warm. (take your old skins, I hear the trail has some dirty spots)
