Transferring stuff from a mac with broken screen to a new one?

first off i did use google before making this thread but didn't find exactly what i was looking for.

anyway, i broke my macbooks screen awhile back and got a new mac just recently to replace it. i knew that when i started up my new mac that it would ask if i would like to transfer everything from my old mac to the the new one, and i had a firewire to do it. however the new macs have a different firewire port then i expected so i choose to transfer data later when i would have the new firewire cord.

Currently im waiting for it to deliver and thought that i might have trouble transferring data with the screen being broken. will it work? will it not? is there something special i have to do to make it work?

just a firewire should work and you should be able to control the other computer. and is there a way to run an external monitor? Anyway the firewire should see the other computer as an external basically i think

that was helpful and yes there is a way to run an external monitor but i do not have an extra monitor or the right cord

The new macbooks only have firewire 800, so you will need a 800 to 400 converter so you can connect the conputers.  Then, you can boot the old mac in target mode (Hold T on Boot up, it should show up as a hard drive on your new mac when it's connected via firewire) then transfer all your stuff onto the new mac when it asks to do so.  That's that.

This is what you need below.  A firewire 800 cable will do you no good in this situation, which is what I assume you ordered.

i ordered a 9 pin to 6 pin firewire. so it will plug into my old macs firewire port (800) and my new macs firewire port (400). Your other post gave me peace of mind. thank you

You're good to go then, the rest is super easy.  Just hold T down when you boot up the old mac.  Since you can't see the screen, hold it for a minute just to be sure.  Then, plug it into your new mac, and it should show up as a hard drive that you can choose to transfer all the contents from.  You should have a perfect clone of your old mac when it's all done.

will there be any conflict at all because i have setup and used my mac for awhile? like i downloaded the cali p album into my empty itunes and i have done other stuff. will it just mesh together?
