Sand Skiing

Alright so I'm currently living in Vietnam and, like everyone on this site, I'm itching to ski. There's a shit ton of sand dunes all over the place so I was wondering if I could put anything on the bases so they wouldn't get too fucked up or something so they slide real good, thanks.

it works...i was in some major dunes in colorado and this dude was skiing down...it looked really hard but sick....u could kinda build a kicker if u really tried nd u dont go super fast but fast enough...def. do it wit some beater skis though cause it prolly grinds away the bottom...mabe if u put a thick layer of wax on??

I've heard they use silicone spray, but I'm betting that Triflow would work better.  Here are links to contact the Ranger at Great Sand Dunes NP.  They ski the dunes there all the time.  Either the ranger will know what they use or will know someone who does.

Definitely want to use crap skis.  I would think that whatever you put on them to make them slide on sand will prevent the skis absorbing wax.  Bases will probably be dead after, unless you can find something to totally clean it off.

I've done it a few times here in Australia, the thing that annoyed me most was the sand getting everywhere, in you boots, bindings, etc. My advice would be use some old gear, yes it is still useful for somethings, and enjoy it.
and remember that sand really hurts, especially if it hits your eyes, if there is a lot of wind and your shredding pretty fast.
It can be very enjoyable if you find a good dune to play on, thanks for reminding me its been awhile since of done this, might try and organize another trip with a few mates in the up coming month while I wait for the Northern Winter.

I would say use beater skis more because the sand is going to get in the bindings and that could not be good.  I don't think it would do too much to the bases, more the edges. But it depends on how fine the sand is.  I have always wanted to try it though.

its really fine sand and no rocks at all and i think ill just use my snow goggles so i dont get too much shit in my eyes

ill take some pictures for sure if i end up doing it, the thing is that i only have 2 pairs of skis and theyre not really shitty and since im all the fucking way over here i dont have access to crappy gear so im a little sketched out about doing it with my good skis

it sounds strange, but Pledge (the stuff to dust/polish your house with) actually works great on sand.  I've sprayed it on my skis whenever i ski the Great Sand Dunes.  It keeps you from being all grabby.  You're bases still get pretty beat though.

If you can get your hands on some formika, it is the single best base surface for sand skiing. My dad experimented with dozens of surfaces during the summers when we lived in Taos, and formika slides really well on sand (of course, attaching the formika is a little difficult if you want to use the skis on snow again, but with a little duct tape and creativity I'm sure you could be slaying the sand dunes in no time.) I'll call him and see if he can send me some pics of his skis to post.

I have a sand board, it might just be cheap plastic snowboard, but it works good and my friend said its a sand board. maybe they have sand skis?

Well unless this kid is ever moving back to somewhere where he can ski on snow gain, does it matter if he screws up one of his pairs of skis.

yeah moving out here blew ive been here for liek 2 months and its way different

i kinda live between two cities, nha trang and ho chi minh city but ill be spending more time in ho chi min  cause im starting school soon


and yeah i need those skis for snow again
