If you climb in the Northeast you know about Rumney in New Hampshire. Some of the best sport climbing in the region with some great climbs. Today I was guiding for work and a girl about a 1000 ft. away from my group was struck by a falling tree. She wasn't climbing, just hanging out and watching a friend.
I heard something come crashing down the wall and thought to myself "wow that sounded like a big tree, hope everyone's all right" and went back to teaching belaying with my group. A minute later a guy was running down the edge of the wall yelling if anyone had any medical knowledge. I ran back with him to find a girl completely crushed by a massive tree. Her legs were clearly broken, her face mangled and she was coughing and most likely choking on her own blood from internal injuries. We stabilized her and called EMT's who then immediately called in a heli for her. We BEAM'd her to a nearby field where the heli landed and picked her up.
It's been on my mind all day and needed to get it out. This is the first big accident I've been on and it just made me think about everything we do and the risks we take. Even if your not on the wall climbing, or dropping into a 50ft. table, accidents can still happen.
So to everyone, don't take stuff for granted. Take it easy and please be safe.
++++vibes for this girl too. I'm trying to find out how she is, but can't help but think she's not doing too hot. Let's hope she got taken care of.
