The congress just got three new gulfstream jets costing tax payers $200 million. When are we going to vote out these hypocritical bastards or better yet realize the basic corrupt nature of government and free ourselves from this leviathan forever?

i love how a couple of months ago it was all the news media and congress could talk about was auto execs flying to DC on their private jets... now they just got 3 new ones..... EPIC FAIL.

fuck that. I would not. I would have respect for the american people and their tax dollars. In fact, I would have a hard time getting paid more than the average salary in the US, if I got paid at all. Most politicians have a lot of money to begin with, and they are not affected by the laws they vote on. They have a private gas station in the capital. They get pretty much everything paid for, including their full salary after one term.

They can fly with everyone else. The only reason not to is security and how can 8 jets even fly all the members of congress around? They cant. Its pointless and shows we need to get almost ALL of them out of office, democrats and republicans.

So I guess you could say I sound like a 10 year old, or you could stop and think about it a little bit yourself and realize that these people are robbing you and your family every day so that they can live lavish and elite lifestyles.

And G5's. Why are they buying G5's? Fucking buy a few Citations. They are so much cheaper. around 3 mil vs 40/50 mill. I forget the costs, but there is a HUGE difference.

ok, first off...

you realize that these aren't just government jets, right? These jets will go to the US Air Force, and for them, this money is nothing. Ever look up the costs of all those new f-22s and various upgrades that usaf fleets are undergoing?

what bothers me about it is that they are actually requesting the new jets solely for their use only. It wouldn't be as bad if any higher up in the government could use them because then they'd get a fair bit of usage, but these would be congress-specific jets.

and it just straight up pisses me off that soldiers are flying commercial, and are packed into cargo jets to fly while we use a smaller, but equally expensive plane to fly 5 people in luxury.

not quite cause for a revolution though.

It's a lost cause, that's how it works, always has and most likely always will.  Politics are dirty, and this isn't surprising.  Purchases like this happen all the time, no one will remember it in a week.  I have been taking a hands off view on politics lately, and it feels nice to just quit caring, as terrible as everyone will say that is.  It's simply greed, nothing more to it.

While I agree that this is an extreme waste I have a question for you: how will "free[ing] ourselves from this leviathan forever" help at all?  It sounds like you want to completely get rid of government.  And while you probably don't support a completely government free society I DO hope you realize that we need a fairly extensive government to make things function given the huge population of our country and the world.  A western style of living where you fend for yourself might seem attractive but when self-imposed restrictions are stripped the base instincts of humans would run rampant.  Again, I'm not sure if this is what you were driving at with your statement but it seems like too many people have a "I don't need the government, go fuck yourself" attitude these days.

No he is talking about getting these assholes out of government. This debate is not about little or no government. It is about the representatives representing the people. Clearly they are not representing us, and they arent not doing their jobs. It is time to fire them...too bad we have to wait till 2010.

to ATLskier - I think there are a lot worse politicians who could be running the country right now, I mean, the Obama administration has done some pretty good stuff (imho).  But I totally agree that these politicians aren't really representing the people right now.   I mean what ever happened to Obama's pledge to transparency in gov.?  or a lot of the other promises he hasn't kept for that matter.

This was probably the wrong thread to attack this issue in,  I guess I'm just sick of all the hicks around here who claim they're seceding and then go shoot at helicopters

I am a libertarian, and though I do have reservations about complete anarchy I would love it if the government would stop controlling many aspects of our lives and our economy and I would also appreciate if they would stop every once in a while and realize that it is our money that they are spending and our money they are throwing down a huge black hole buying unneeded things like Business fitted 737. At least when companies buy extravagant shit it's with their own money, and if they rip of their investors they'll be arrested, unlike congressmen who get reelected when they rip of taxpayers.

Seeing as my dad overlooks the maintenance of an airlines whole entire fleet(claim?), I can tell you that its not just the cost of the airplanes themselves, but the maintenance that will cost a ton.

Im getting so sick of the government, republican, democrat, I dont care. Most of them are out for themselves (well no shit) and im getting sick of it. Obama pushing through all this shit that people obviously dont want, and he doesnt care.

It can always get worse, but thats no reason to accept what we have now. Obama hasnt met a lot of his promises, yes. What hicks around here have said anything about seceding? (by the way, Connecticut was going to secede because of the war of 1812, but didnt) The only talk has been about texas, and thats mostly about the 10th amendment. Helicopters? stop making shit up.

The point is the representatives in washington are doing a terrible job right now, from jets to horse birth control(yes look it up). America can do much better than this.

But at least F-22's are somewhat for the public, they are meant at least theoretically to protect America and it's population from a hostile attack.

On the flip side the private jets that Congress ordered does absolutely nothing for the American people and allows our congress people to live like kings of the taxpayers hard work.

Like anyone else I'm pretty set in my opinions and I really don't want to start a political argument but that stuff about the helicopter isn't bullshit.  Here's a link to an article in my local paper,  3rd paragraph from the end,  it's the most credible source but if you google "montana militia national guard helicopter" you'll get a whole lot of other articles about the incident

my biggest complaint is that several weeks ago congress canceled the f-22 program and any further deliveries of them....on the basis that they cost too much!

agreed that its bullshit that these jets are to be specifically for congress. Hell, even the president doesn't get his own, full time jet! (The vc-25s (used to transport the president) are also used by other high level government figures. There's just always 1 of the 2 ready to transport the president at any time)

air force one is the callsign of any plane he is on. He could be flying his own, single engine prop plane, and it would still be called air force one.

The planes people always call air force one/that he uses to travel internationally are actually 747s, designated vc-25s by the air force. There are 2 of them, and each is an exact replica of the other, except for the tail number. 1 of them is always on standby, whereas the other can be used by top military officials, particularly in the air force. Doesn't happen very often though since it's somewhat impractical to bring such a huge aircraft everywhere, not even the president uses it a lot of the time. And technically it's not always at his disposal, it's the decision of the Air Force. If for some unlikely reason, they chose to not allow him an aircraft, he'd be screwed. Of course that would never happen.

Truth of the matter is that the Vc-25s (air force one) are a huge waste of money. Almost no other leader of any country has 2 huge private jets for their use. The french president uses an A340, which is used by all gov't officials, and all british leaders, including the queen...fly british airways.
