Academics vs. Ski..

I live in Chapel Hill, NC, and the college here, UNC, is super super hard to get into and very legit in academics. It's expected of me to go to UNC since i live here now, but i'm from colorado and wanna go to boulder so i can ski. is there a way for me to make an actual argument that boulder is the better school when it really isn't?? I've applied at both and gotten into both so now it's just up to where i wanna go, but like i said my parents, both ivy league grads, want me to do the best. I'd rather ski and have an easier time education wise though...

how can i argue this ???

take a year off and live in CO and maybe take classes in the fall, spring, summer so that you can ski all winter. if you manage to live there all year on your own or with a small group of friends, i think your parents should trust you in your decisions. it is your life. if they are paying, say that boulder is cheaper and has a better program for what you are looking for and that you just dont see yourself as an ivy league scholar.

you want to have a life outside of school. and by that i mean that you want to ski every day this winter and you want to ski at a real resort.

Go to Boulder. Simple as that, it's your life, time to take charge of your own destiny.

UNC and CU Boulder are among the top public universities in the States. Your main issue I guess, is that you'll pay in-state tuition for UNC and out-of-state tuition for CU Boulder.

What do you wish to study?

why dont you just go to a good school near skiing?

thats what i plan on doing.
Im looking at Colorado College, and them i would kill to play lacrosse at dartmouth or middlebury

no reason to make a sacrafice when you can have the best of both worlds

it's too late know, but if you had realized that your parents wanted you to go to unc earlier, you could have got some c's so that you wouldn't get in. but moving from collorado to the south must have sucked. i would try to get the fuck out as soon as possible.

haha you think CC is a good college.  that place is an effing joke. seriously its retardedly easy and is the pussyiest liberal arts school ever. 

OP, UNC is the better school period.  how about you think about the rest of your life instead of the next 4 years.  UNC has better alumni connections, looks MUCH better on a resume, and is a great overall school.  you will have chances to ski when you get out of college and choose to work whereever.  Straight up CU is known to be a party school, and not much else.  Its still a good school though, but its not even in the same league as the UNC's, dukes, and virginia's of the world.

I did the whole move out west for college thing and I fucking love it so far. I moved out for the 09 spring semester. this fall ill only be able to ski weekends and mondays from 9:20 on but I only had weekends and fridays to ski last winter so it'll be all good. living in denver or boulder isn't too bad either. tons of people carpool. I got 50+ days in last season and I was only there from jan-april. plus you always have semester breaks to ski a fuckton, mine is a whole month (dec 11th - jan 11th), and I even got a good amount of skiing in on my summer break. I got out april 19th and left the 31st to visit home but if I stayed I would of had almost two more months of skiing at abaybay....

I don't regret my decision at all, keep in mind I gave up free living, realllyyyy cheap school, and a retail job that paid 22k a year (im only 19). now I go to a school thats way more expensive, have to pay rent, and work shit ass random jobs. but I get to ski some of the best shit out there all season. skiing is my life, school comes at a close second though. I go to art school for graphic design so I hope to combine the two one day....then life will be complete.

Seriously. And just say you want to go into engineering. CU has one of the top engineering programs in the country. Once you are here you can decide what you want to do. I'm guessing part of your parents hesitation is partying, so show them you are responsible. Another part might be money since it would be out of state tuition now, so make sure you apply for scholarships and grants (you don't have to be a 4.0 student anymore to get scholarships, you just gotta know where to look for them) And if they still don't say yes, at least you get to go to UNC.

yea im busting my ass fall semster, 19 credits, 20 hour a week internship, and an on campus job just so when second semester rolls around i can take 12 credits and try to only have classes one or 2 days a week, and not work,

why not look at some school up north, if your concerned look at schools like darthmouth, middlebury, and colby some of the hardest schools to get in to pretty close to good skiing

Go to Boulder. Its the shit.

Although UNC is a good school, CU Boulder is also great, and really you wouldn't be sacrificing success by going there.

You could also say that you want to go in to the skiing business and Boulder would be a great place to make connections. ex: I want to start my own ski company and the people I would likely hang out with in Boulder have the same interests and entrepreneurial attitude as you do, and therefore  Boulder would be better for you than UNC

to all th people who say get an education first its whats most important. all your parents will hate me butits not. whats most important is getting educated in what YOU WANT TO DO. If skiing is a huge part of your life. fuck i, ski. if you want to go to school in the south go to school in the south. Education while being a huge boosting step doesnt guaruntee happiness only more money. so take your pick.

but seriously. It depends on what you are studying. If the program you are interested in is better at UNC, go there.


I was in the exact same situation as you a few years ago. I live in Atlanta, and my choices were georgia tech, boulder, and va tech. At this point, skiing was huge in my life.

I went to tech, and I am so happy I didnt go to boulder. Theres no possible way I could get the education I get now at boulder, especially in regard to architecture (my major). Had I gone to boulder, I would have focused on skiing, not school. To be honest, I dont get to do terrible amounts of skiing(around 20 days). But seriously, there are many other things besides skiing. My highschool self would be appalled by these statements, but being in college allows you to do many other things besides skiing.

Basically, my choice came down to this. Go to school for free, get a better education, and not ski so much for 4-5 years. Then take a year or two off (very easy in this economy) and ski. Ill have a better and more respected degree for free, and ski more later with better jobs.

You may really enjoy skiing a lot now, but skiing is really only a temporary thing, but your degree will stay with you. Im not saying having a degree from colorado, because its certainly not a bad school, but when you factor in cost and everything else, I think going with a better education is the right way to go.




sorry one last thing. I dont know what your finantial situation is. Other than 300 a month from my parents to pay rent, thats all I get. I pay everything else. My econ teacher who is like 45-50 came into class one day and told us he just finished paying off his student loans the day before since he went out of state. I was pretty set on going to colorado at this point, but i realized, its much better to get a free/close to free education, than it is to ski more and pay far greater to get a worse education. if taking a year off to get in state tuition works for you, then consider that.

Out of state tuition will be more expensive. 4 years of free college is amazing, especially at UNC. I would at least try it for a semester, just to see if you like it. If not then transfer out. I'm going to school in the south saving on in-state tuition and all that money is going towards my winter break so I can fly out to mt.hood and spend a month strait there.

I will tell you this.. success is not measured by how much money you make, where you graduate or what job you have... even so, success in your carreer is not defined by where you go to school.  Most youngsters these days think that going to a good school = getting a good job.  This is not true.  Its all about how well you perform and apply yourself to your schooling and ALOT about who you know.  The two jobs outa school that I have landed and btw pay well have not been because I posted 4.0's in school but because I happened to know people in the industry who had job openings.  Think about it this way, CU is a good school and its not going to look bad if you graduate from there.  College is 4 (maybe 5 or 6) years out of your entire life that you can never have back.  This is your one time to ski 4-5 days a week and be able to say fuck class I'm going skiing.  Take it from me, once the real world hits those days are over.  So its great if you want to go to an Ivy league school but you may be missing the four greatest ski years of your entire life.

This is not true, as long as you have a degree in what you are doing or are certified your past work experience becomes soooo much more important than where you went to school.  After being in the industry for a few years HR reps will hardly care what your GPA or what school you went to, they will want to know where you worked, what you did and how well you performed at that job.... This mainly to business, finance, marketing and engineering...

meh if you go to unc you'll just be a faggy prick the rest of your life. just go to appy where you'll have 3-4 HUGE mountains nearby to shred. you could smoke lots of weed, drop out of school and eventually run ATP. or you could just threaten to go to appy at that should be enough for your parents to respect a real skiing school out west instead of the gay baby blue tarholes

Colorado College is expensive as shit if your out of state. I go to boulder and I would reccomend it, coming from one colorado native to another just say you excel more at a school where your used to the environment and where when you need it you can take a break to go skiing.

But my parents own and i can do what ever the fuck i want.

I have heard very good things about Cu as an engineering school in general. You can definitely push that case if you look up the facts.

Also you can still go to CU, and push yourself, and ski... which is exactly as i intend to do.

I got into an argument with my parents over this exact topic, except for Canadian universities.  I live in Ontario so the skiing is shitty and I'm dying to move out West.  My parents have come up with the plan for me to go to the University of Toronto, get a scholarship and live at home.  I would much rather go with my plan, go to the University of British Columbia, get a scholarship and ski real mountains!!!!  Luckily, I have this year to prove to them that my plan is better. Wish me luck haha

I see what your saying, and agree somewhat, but for 2 people, with identical work experiences, the one with the degree from the good school will get hired more than the one from the not so good school. And in this economy, getting a job out of school is key, and that is when people pay attention to your degree since you dont have as much work experience.


My point was you can always go skiing later. Separate the two. Instead of skiing a medium amount and getting a medium education, get a great education, take a few years off to have a great amount of skiing.

After your first job they really dont look at your school or GPA they look at experience.  Again I had 2 internships (work experiences) before I entered the workforce and that was the number one thing that recruiters and HR personnel looked at.  Most companies don't even know how well a school rates anyways unless its a big name University.  There is a difference between a tech schools, community colleges and big Universities.  But at the Univeristy/State school level your on an even playing field.  It comes down to how well you interview, your practical exam if you have one on your interview if your school is nationally  accredited, and or if you are certified, CPA, certified engineer and so on.  Any state school will be fine in my opinion.  Now days your credit score has more to do with you getting a job than half of the things on your application.

Also about skiing later.  If you want to ski Saturday and maybe a Sunday here or there ski when your out of school and have a JOB, maybe a WIFE and maybe a FAMILY, or have back or knee problems.  Your time and body deteriorate as you get older no matter how invincible you think you are and if you do get a normal job 8 - 5 good luck finding the time to ski 60-80 times a year like I did in school.

I will say however that if you do make some good money outa school on some start up with stock options or anything, taking a year off to be a ski bumb is totally the way to do things.  I know some people who moved to park city at the age of 26 and had the time of there life for 18 months living down there
