Im New!!! and I Need a Ski Rack for a Rare Car

ok the cars not rare, but finding a ski rack for it seems to be rare. its for a:

2002 Acura RSX

the thing that doesnt help is that i know nothing about ski racks. it seems to me that yakima makes the only one that fits. but i dunno what model... trying to keep it as cheap as possible. also open to used racks. are most racks universal or custom to the vehicle? any help or info is very much appreciated

Most racks are a combination of universal and specific parts. You may need to buy the specific "fit kit" for your car from yakima or thule, but then can probably get some used bars and ski carriers on craigslist etc

an RSX!?!  Sick.  I drive a Nissan Nismo and I am sporting the Yakima FatCat.  The cars are extremely similar.  You're gonna want the locks too.

A ski rack consists of two parts, the mounting bars and the actual rack itself (the part that holds the skis). Some cars have a factory rack that you can mount a ski rack to (like my outback), some do not, and your car definitely doesn't. In that case you need to get a mounting kit specific for your car and then a rack that fits on top of that (the racks are universal, the mounting kits are not).

Go to thule.com and put in the make and model of your car, it'll show you everything you need, with different options. You can even order it online and install it yourself (not hard). Or go to a dealer and pick one up.

I have a pulltop 6 and I fucking love it. I can fit mad skis and snowboards on there which is good because living in denver means carpooling a lot. I usually go to the mountain with at least 3 other people. Also the rack pulls out so you don't have to reach over your shit covered car to get your skis. Keeps from getting road shit and sludge from getting all over your jacket. Might sound like a yuppie thing to do but believe me it's worth it. I used to have brown stains all over my jacket that wouldn't come out from road grime.

thanks for all that info. i checked thule, they dont make one for my car. yakima does tho. they have a stretch option. anyone know what that is? it cost more so i hope i dont need it

With any brand you will need a stretch kit/short roof adapter.

My suggestion is to get an INNO base rack. The fit will be much better than the yakima one, it fits more like a Thule Rack. The Reason it is nicer than the yakima, is that the rubber pad is much thicker, and designed to fit the shape of the roofline. The hook is also totally coated in a protective layer, where as yakima only provides you with a protective sticker. If you will be taking this off more than once a year, definitely get INNO, the yakima stickers always wear out.

You can also get it in black or silver.

The INNO system you would need is the INNO SU system, with K258 Fit Kit and the INNO JK short roof bars.

Use the Rack confiurator on Yakima's website.  http://http://yakima.com/Consumer/Step1.aspx

not sure if that link will work.... but i will sell you the part that actually holds the skis for pretty cheap.  You'll have to find the foot pack and cross bars elsewhere... i recommend backcountry.com.
