My friends and I built a sick rail and were too lazy to build a nice drop in so we used an extendable painting ladder off a roof. It was super sketchy and needlessly dangerous. We hit it, but it was so shaky and you had no control so we built a turf drop in later. So to sum it up: they work if you don't want to build anything better but they suck because you have no control.
I've used a ladder once for an urban setup, it's sketchy, shaky, and annoying as fuck to deal with in general but it's cheap, portable, and does the job. for a summer setup though I'd invest in building a drop in. It'll just make your sessions better...find friends to help chip in.
Yeah I have a portable drop in too that has the pvc pipes down the front. I don't like it that much anymore, I just feel like there is NO control when going down it. Your skis slip around a lot... I like a different sort of ladder design now. Just have what you do now, but but rungs of turf there instead of the pvc. Just as much speed, but much more in control.
Aluminum works fine. You can also buy a sheet of plywood and screw it into the ladder if you want. It's sturdy and straight. If you cut the sheet of plywood down the middle, you will have a drop in that's 24 inches wide.
Ive never had a problem with control going down it, all your doing is going straight. My main problem is always putting my skis on on top. That is SKETCHY.
