What's the east coast like?

I love NYC because of its diversity.  You can walk down the street and see so many different types of people.  I live in Brooklyn and I love it here.  I go skiing up in VT and spend summers there and like the small town vibe from that town.  The skiing's actually pretty good, not really compared to the west, but I still like it.

The east coast is really diverse which is nice.

I live in Michigan. We have crime in Detroit. Been in the recession"longest here. Culture wise...compared to Utah and Colorado, we have more african american's and there are enclaves in Chicago and Detroit where primarily arab americans live. Michigan has a bit to do, and we are always near an international airport. Summer or winter we have a lot to do, but any area with rivers and lakes and stuff will offer these same activities. Our highest peak in the state is like 2000ft so that gives you an idea of how the skiing is. 500ft or so is the tallest hill in the lower peninsula. Driving to the UP takes 4 hours just to get there, and then another 4-8 to get to some better ski hills in the UP.

We have that christian mindset usually. You see lots of pro-life stuff...and churches around here in general. I don't know, its hard to say, when I talk here I talk like Colorado doesn't have a lot of churches probably.

We don't have to drive around fucking mountains and shit (hello I70 and Little Big Cottonwood). I look at a lot of maps, and it would seem....we have a lot of towns and cities everywhere that have townships with grids of streets going lower as you get toward the county line. These are everywhere around here, and it makes avoiding traffic easy. I look at some maps out west and it seems a lot of the areas don't have this grid system or whatever happening because the terrain doesn't allow for it or whatever?
I am sure there are tons of places out west that have this kind of road system though.

boston is a great place

my take on the east coast. there is the boswash, which extends from portland, maine to richmond, virginia and there is the rest. the boshwash is all city and suburbs all along the coast. it is smaller than california, but has 20 million more people. the rest is rural and has great mountains, lakes, and wilderness.

virginia: lots of dc suburbs, some southern hospitality, and not much skiing.

pennsylvania: there is philly and western penn. philly is a big, dirty city, with lots of rich suburbs. and western is mostly rural, but has pittsburgh and lake erie.

new jersey: also has two parts. north jersey is mostly suburban. people live there to take trains to nyc, but they also have mountain creek, which is a sick mountain. south jersey has the jersey shores with nice beach towns on barrier islands, but they also have philly suburbs way inland and the pine barrings in the middle, where there is nothing.

new york: everyone knows what nyc is like, but upstate there is pretty much nothing except for trees, mountains, lakes, and a few scattered cities. very nice scenery.

connecticut: pretty much made of small/mid sized cities and suburbs. the southwestern part of the state commutes to nyc. the north western part of the state is all woods, with very few mountains. has a nice coast, but no waves because of long island.

rhode island: smallest state. northern part of the state is mostly city. the southern part has the coast with a much smaller population density. the beaches in ri are very nice and they have good waves.

massachusettes: eastern mass has boston, the cape, the beaches, and lots and lots of suburbs. the cape has some nice beaches and good potato chips. western mass has a lot of woods, a few cities, and 6 flags. its close to southern vermont, so not a bad place for a skier.

new hampshire: southern new hampshire is real close to boston and has a few small cities. northern new hampshire has a shit load of mountains including mount washington and loon, which is all you would even need. it also has good camping and hiking.

vermont: mostly rural. doesn't have any real cities, but has the best mountains in the northeast. the only problem is new yorkers tend to flock to these mountains.

maine: the only state east of the missippi with a smaller population density than the u.s. maine is made of two extremes. southern maine, which i would say ends at freeport and contains only like 10% of the area, has portland (the only real city north of boston) and its suburbs, llbean, and some sick beaches. some people in southern maine commute to boston as well. but half of this state is made of unorganized territory, which means that there are no towns or any form of local government. in this half of the state, there are only 9,000 people. northern maine is extremely rural and contains these unorganized territories, but it also has a couple very small cities like bangor and lewiston. northern maine also has some real nice mountains and lakes.

has anyone else ever noticed that vermont is the only state on the east coast that isn't physically on the east coast?

Hahahahaha, so stupid. Mostly every city has crime, if you're basing your opinion largely on crime, I assume you hate NYC. Hartford is not a bad city, lots of jobs, due to all the insurance companies there are, sure I wouldn't want to travel in the bad neighbourhoods there or anything, that's just stupid. It's not dangerous unless you make it dangerous. I wouldn't really want to live in the city, but the suburbs are nice, like West Hartford(represent), Avon, Simmsbury, Glastonbury, those are all really nice towns. With very low crime rate, good schools, basically all the parents have really good jobs and commute into Hartford. Sorry but that was just a stupid comment.

I'm not gonna lie, i love living in the Southern Appalachians. It's absolutely gorgeous, and we make damn good barbeque and sweet tea and just all around good cookin throughout the South. The best part of it all is the Moonshine. It was started and perfected down here. It's fuckin awesome. There's also the moonshiners turned growers down here too. For that matter, according to the DEA over half of the weed distributed through the USA is grown in the Southern Appalachians, mainly in western NC, Eastern TN, and Eastern KY. Yes we have rednecks and hicks galore, but i'll be damned if i'm forced out of the southeast.

I can say nyc is my favorite place though, nothing compares to skating in nyc, the overall atmosphere and rawness of all the spots and people is amazing.

You better have had Mexican food and if you thought it was bad then there is something wrong with your taste buds.  What fruit did you have?  Peaches and nectarines are pretty much out of season, and oranges are best in January-February.

sierra steeze, fyi adirondack park covers some 6.1 million acres  a land area about the size of Vermont, or of the Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Glacier, and Great Smoky Mountains National Parks COMBINED, so yes, we can beat that, all in one park i might add.

as for the skiing, every area is completely different. west virginia actually gets a lot of snow but theres hardly anywhere to ski. PA has the poconos which are pretty decent depending on how the winters goin. nj has mountain creek which literally turned into one big terrain park and is actually a pretty good one at that. mass, conn and RI dont have too many places, although i know mass has one place thats supposed to be pretty nice. NY has hunter which is a really difficult mountain but again, it depends on how the winters goin. whiteface is usually icey because the slopes are north facing and the winds from canada smack u in the face. maine has sunday river which can get ALOT of snow and its pretty fluffy, now utah pow but still nice, new hampshire has some great backcountry like tucks. VT is awesome depending where u go. stratton gets alot of fluff because its the highest mountain in the area. killington has great terrain but is way too crowded. then theres stowe and jay. both get dumped on even in the worst winters and the pow in amazing. still not champagne, but as close as one can get without leaving the east. anyone heard of the jay cloud?

now for all u haters, why hatin on new jeresy so much? have u ever been or is it just all hear say? do u base your opinions on the turnpike or the airport? cause any new jeresy will tell you that those places smell. everyone is talking about richest places and worst ghettos, hello, but we've got them all. our cities are more dangerous than any section of LA or NYC or Detroit, just look it up in the books. but then we also have some of the wealthiest places in the usa, hunterdon, somerset and morris counties ALWAYS rank higher than any cali county. franklin lakes, mantaloking, saddle river are all some of the wealthiest places in the US. i have nothing against any other state, except mass because there a bunch of massholes, jk, but dont judge a book by its cover. we have a little bit of everything to offer, maybe not the best or biggest, but its all here. plus we have taylor ham, something that u west coasties cant even imagine, so sit on that bitches!

Ahh, wrong place for good Mexican.  You need to stop at some Mexican restaurant in a run down shopping center.  That's how it is in my town.  The family makes it, not just some Mexican chef born here in America.  It's the wrong time for fruit here though, tree fruit at least, June and early July is the time for Peaches and Nectarines.  LA isn't exactly the greatest representation of the West though, I recommend San Francisco.

According to Wikipedia it is not.  "It is the largest park and the largest state-level protected area in the contiguous United States."  State level does not make it national.

sierrasteeze, you seem like the only person in this thread convinced that this is about an east/west argument.  you can site facts as much as you want about agriculture, national parks, whatever, but the fact is, I think we can all appreciate our homes without downplaying the other coast.  what is this, crips/bloods come to NS? 

Reread the first post and tell me it doesn't just ask for a description of why new englanders like the east, becasue he has never left the PNW.  No need to get defensive.  Personally, I bet I could be happy in the east or west.

If you really want to prove me wrong then beat California's 20 million acres of National Forest land.  That is minus the other millions of aces of national park land, and while we're at it I can add state protected land if you care enough.  No hate towards the East, but California is a huge fucking state.  look at a map and imagine how many states you could fit into California.  Pretty much all of New England fits into California.

Ah, while we're on the topic.  There are some things I wish the West had different than the East.  Out West the first car is always how some kids will judge you (materialistic little bitches), on the East it is kind of more what school you get into or how you do in school.  I wish it was like that out here.  We have a fair amount of materialistic people out here.  Luckily, I am not friends with those type of people and I live in a place that is not too materialistic, but it pisses me off.
