The iPod Touch and the iPhone...

can both connect to Wi-Fi, surf the web on Safari, and receive emails through the internet. So why is it that AT&T charges $30 a month for the iPhone's "data" plan and with a iPod Touch its a one-time-fee sort of deal. Is the answer obvious and i just haven't read the right information on Apples and AT&Ts websites? Or is AT&T really just charging you extra money because they can and people will pay it because they want an iPhone? Much thanks to anyone that can help or explain this to me...

iPhones can get internet anywhere with 3G, touches don't, you are paying 30 a month for 3G network.

so the iPod touch can only connect in Wi-Fi hot spots whereas the iPhone can connect say, driving on the road with no Wi-Fi for miles?

Yup. So you don't have to waste your plan's minutes if you're somewhere with free wifi.

I'm pretty sure they make you get an unlimited plan.

Not in Canada, or with Rogers or whatever my friends use. There is a certain MB limit to how much you can view. I don't know how it works but my friends are always complaining about it.

They also make you get the plan because the amount you pay straight ahead for the phone ($200 or whatever) is not enough alone for the cost of the phone.
If they did that and did not make you get the data plan I guarantee you they would lose money.

WTF? Maybe because the iPhone gets data everywhere AT&T has service (i.e. anywhere there's 3G GSM coverage? Meanwhile, the iPod touch only connects to WiFi networks AND Apple charges for software point releases.
